I just seen a fleet of buses all with 5. 9's, some diesel and some Natural gas. One cought my eye with the turbo that was on it. It had a really big compressor housing but a TINY turbine side with a 3 in exhaust. I was really curios to find out what it was, can you guys help me ID the turbo? One other diesel motor had an HX35 along with the CNG buses, but the other diesel bus had this turbo.

Not sure if this will help but the information is cool. This is from an RV forum.

Summary: ISB Engines

Solution:

Thanks for your Email message.

To answer your question on the ISB and Dodge venture. The Dodge Ram engine started as an 6B5. 9 with 12 valves. The current version is an ISB engine and is a fully electronic, 24 valve in-line 6-cylinder turbocharged B series diesel engine. It is an engine that is revolutionary thanks to something Cummins calls the Interact System. It produces a class leading 325 hp with 600 lb-ft torque.

We started building this engine over 20 years ago. It started out as a B5. 9 and in 1997 we put electronic fuel system on it. After that it is called an ISB engine.

The Cummins 6B5. 9 is the kind of engine that could make a big difference in your business, due to the engines excellent performance, durability, reliability and fuel economy. The Cummins 6B5. 9 engine is designed smart and built tough to produce the kind of power many applications demand.

The 6B5. 9 engine's performance is being noticed all over the world and the engine is produced in nine production locations around the world. The success of the Cummins 6B5. 9 engines is directly tied to its outstanding performance, which outperforms other competitive engines in its class, in many different applications.

The big advantage of the Cummins 6B5. 9 is its size and weight, which allows you to adapt the engine to about any application required. Through smart design, the Cummins 6B5. 9 engine is strong where strength is critical, since unnecessary weight has been eliminated. Also, the 6B5. 9 has 40% less parts, than other engines in its class.

Having fewer parts than competitive engines adds to the 6B5. 9's durability and reliability because there is less to go wrong and with fewer parts there are less things to fix. Also, the engine requires no special tools for maintenance repairs, since standard everyday metric tools are all it takes to get make repairs to the engine.

Cummins has built the standard 6B5. 9 engine series in various horsepower and torque ratings for many different customers for many years. The standard mechanical, 12 valve 6B5. 9 automotive engines from Cummins are:

160 hp with 400 lb-ft torque

175 hp with 420 lb-ft torque

175 hp with 430 lb-ft torque

180 hp with 420 lb-ft torque

190 hp with 475 lb-ft torque

210 hp with 485 lb-ft torque

210 hp with 520 lb-ft torque

215 hp with 440 lb-ft torque

230 hp with 605 lb-ft torque

There are also many other ratings that range from 100 to 325 horsepower for the Dodge Ram and off-highway applications, such as construction, genset, industrial, marine, mining, etc.

6B5. 9 - 160 vital statistics:

Horsepower 160 @ 2500

Width 32. 44 in.

Height 35. 52 in.

Weight 942 lbs.

The marine versions of this engine dimensions are:

In January 1997 Cummins announced the ISB 275 for RV use, which is rated at 275 hp with 660 lb-ft torque. The engine was coupled to an Allison automatic and has been used in many 1997 diesel powered rear pusher motorhomes. The engine was just released for the Dodge Ram pickup truck, however, rated at slightly higher hp and but less torque to accommodate the Dodge drivetrain. While the current B5. 9 and C8. 3 engines are certainly proven products, we are not aware of other applications such as Freightliner that may be switching to the more powerful ISB, however, we expect that they will. You might discuss this with Freightliner to find out if they plan to change their product line.

The Cummins ISB is a fully electronic, 24 valve in-line 6-cylinder turbocharged B series diesel engine. It is an engine that is revolutionary thanks to something Cummins calls the Interact System. The Interact System is a new engine design platform that combines sophisticated electronic engine controls with high-pressure fuel injection and high-strength componentry for engines that outperform every competitive diesel on the market today. The Interact System 'talks' to vehicle systems like the fan clutch and engine brake, as well as the power train.

The ISB engine is expected to deliver 15% more miles/hours to overhaul, with double the service interval of the current B series models. The engine also has increased torque and horsepower ratings and is up to 4 dB quieter than any previous B series engines. The fuel/water separator filter is designed for 15,000 mile service intervals and has a water-in-fuel sensor. The rocker system of the ISB is designed for minimum 150,000 miles without adjustment and the valve springs are standard 60 psi heavy-duty for use with exhaust brakes. The standard oil capacity of the Cummins ISB engine is 15 U. S. quarts and oil change intervals are recommended every 15,000 miles.

Fuel economy for the ISB engine has been improved 2% - 4% over last year's B5. 9 engines. The engines also have more response over the entire power range. The engine has an integrated air heater that automatically 'kicks-in' whenever engine and ambient temperatures drop, plus the ISB has a start-up protection feature that limits rpm until oil temperature and pressure are high enough. The ISB engine ratings include the previous B5. 9 ratings, plus new ratings at 230 hp with 660 lb/ft torque, 250 hp with 660 lb/ft torque and a special rating at 275 hp with 660 lb/ft for RV's, fire apparatus and school bus applications.

ISB ratings:
