OK Guys, I am looking for some input here. I have a 1st gen CTD ready to go into my Suburban as soon as I get the trans back. The only thing that I havent fully decided on is what to do with the turbo. Its an HC1 with a 21cm exhaust housing. (from what ive read about the ex housing, its a dog). Im trying to decide what upgrades to do to the turbo. At this point since I already purchased the exhaust system, Im leaning towards an making changes to this turbo rather than to replace it all together. At least the use of a 1st gen ex housing so I wont have to retro-fit the down pipe. Can anyone tell me the upgrades and results they have had with the HC1 or is it better to upgrade to a different turbo. This vehicle is heavy. Will not be doing much towing to speak of. Mostly around town driving. Other upgrades such as injectors and pump mods will be in the future but all else is stock at this point with the exception of a full 4" downpipe and exhaust. Thanks in advance for the input. :D

Don't ya hate when that happens LOL, thats another thing i gotta do is get a kit to redo mine on the '92... . I have a couple of turbo's here from military engines wished i could figure a way to fit them LOL... . From what i have read and seen there are endless possibilities when it comes to different turbos... . Good luck

I found a good place to get a rebuilt kit from. If you purchase a kit from him he will balance the assembly as part of the deal. From what Ive read its a must to balance it. Let me know if you want the contact info.

shoot me a Pm on here with that information, i know you can get the kits on ebay for around 40$, mine is a very minut oil seap preturbo and right now i can't think of what it is someone else told me, bearing/seal or something that was getting wear on it, my Propeller shaft has no side to side or up and down movement which is good, from what i have read on here and conversation it seems pretty much straight forward and easy to do. But if i can have it rebuilt and balanced that may not be a bad deal at all.
Oh and in the near future i need to get the gasket# and so forth where you replaced yours on that engine with the front case gasket etc... wished i could get that tierod bar fixed thats really the only hold up for me on the 92'

Not that necessary to balance it. If you mark it's orientation before disassembly and put it back there it will be fine. I've done several like that.

In reworking my parts turbo, I have pieces I need to assemble. The performance shop said to balance would be 60. 00

They balance the wheels, not the assembly, so there is no reindexing. I don't know how you could reindex the impeller to the turbine shaft and get it exactly right by a scribe or pen mark when these turn so fast. But what I stuill don't understand is why they need to be balanced if the wheels are balanced individually to begin with.

I will opt to have the two wheels balanced for nothing more than peace of mind.

If you do opt to balance, don't rebuild the turbo first. Rather give them the two wheels first, then assemble.

Ive been shopping for turbo parts. It seems a person could pay for a new turbo for about the same money it would cost to do a few upgrades to the HC1. What do you guys suggest. Has anyone just upgraded to an HX40???

HX40 is too big and laggy plus its old technology with some restrictions on how fast you can spin it.

Ebay usually has several HE351VE's for really good pirces considering how good the turbo is. Same with an HE351, it will cost you a little more but its almost a direct bolt on. Both are quick spool, excellent air up to about 45 psi and tough to blow unless you try hard.

Barely boke 1000 degrees in the minimal time he could test it. Roads were wet and weather crappy then ran into injector and pump problems we think are fixed.

Hopefully he will have more time to test it out in different situations. Not sure how valid it will be until we can replace the TC because it will blow thru the stocker like tissue paper when you nail the throttle.

Need to get a DTT 90% TC in there and really load the engine down to see how its going to flow. Expect we will need to do some tuning on the VGT to get it to where it needs to be.

I will know a lot more when I drive the other truck from Seattle to Atlanta with a load. I have a couple of good steep grades in mind to push the limits on. :D
