i was just wondering how much work it is to put a hx35 turbo on, or piers' hx35, or would it just be easier to put on a 16 or 14cm^2 housing on, and what would that take, either by myself or labor at a mechanic? thankyou
Putting on the turbo is the same as putting on a housing. It would be really easy if you get a new housing so you didn't have to try to separate the old one. If you get a housing with a wastegate then you will need to modify the exhaust pipe.
Does a 12 or 14cm^2 housing from a hx-35 fit our turbos? I would like to know before plunking down a couple hundred dollars only to find out i'm out of luck! And, would a 14cm^2 non-wastegated housing overboost with 4. 10's, automatic, and going 55-70mph? Thankyou
I have a 16 housing and max boost is about 25#. Could turn the pump up somemore but there is too much smoke now for my tastes. I would like to get to 30# though. Cummzpower ran about 39# boost with his old first gen and still wanted more.
At 70 MPH there is only a pound or so boost when empty and on flat ground. Floor it or get into the hills or towing, thats when it goes up.
I don't think you will "overboost" with a 14, will just get the boost much faster. The total will go up some but not that much. Now, if you turn the pump up big time then it's a different story.
Is there a site that has details on how to install an exhaust housing by yourself? I would love to know how hard this BOMB is! And, I can just grab a housing off of a HX-35 and it will fit? I was planning on getting PW injectors too, though
You need to get a manual, it is shown in there. (At least it is in the Cummins manual) Like you, I was a little apprehensive about changing. I did have a problem getting the old housing loose but since I had another turbo impeller assembly, I just swapped them out and put it back together. (The old housing is still on the old impeller assem. )
You will need a new gasket between the turbo and manifold if you take the whole turbo unit off.
