Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Turbo making funny noise??

I could have hurt (or killed) myself doing something stupid like this!!





Tonight on the way home from a sled pulling event where

JR Adkins (paintersdiesel) pulled, (strokethis24v and aotte)

were also present.

On the way out of the event on a hilly state road I was driving like a maniac leaving another Cummins behind me in smoke and he was making an attempt to catch (which was not happening),

me and Aaron (hes in the passenger seat) came upon this hill

and I must have been doing about 60 or better when I crested it

then we both realized at the same time (both having to speak at the same time) "were in the AIR!!" so its oh sh-- time,

then about that time the truck hits the pavement, bounces Hard then another bounce, I suspect I was about 5-7 feet in the air.



When the truck got back on the road, it was making a weird noise at throttle and dethrottle, then we pulled over and checked everything we could think of at the moment, everything looked ok.

Got back on the road, and at about 1100 rpm it make this funny (wooooooo) noise and it would go away after more RPM, but when decelerating it would make the same noise at about the same RPM.

Im thinking I have damaged my turbo.

Anyhow, I cant really get the truck to duplicate the noise now that Im home.

Bye the way so far the truck still handles fine, and still has great power.

Don't know what the noise is but I'd have liked to seen that big beast in the air. Good luck figuring out the problem.

Air intake.......

Full power so the pressure side is probably OK. I would check the intake side. Depending on what filter your running maybe it got dislodged. I doubt it hurt the turbo. Suspension took most of the impact. Check the oil connections to and from. Or possibly low oil temporarily form the flight. If it had no oil for any extended period it would be toast.

Well after looking this morning,

I hit hard enougn that the tires made contact with the inner fenders on the front end.

Also, the front tires/wheels are bowed slightly outward on their bottom sides.

Any advice in fixing this problem is greatly appreciated!!



For now im out of commission!!

You're going to need a turbo pretty soon. The bearings are almost worn out, most likely. If you keep on, the compressor wheel will rub the housing and get trashed. right now you might get away with new bearings and a precision balance job (not just any turbo shop).

You probably bent the axle housing.

Check the engine mounts at the engine block. I saw a 12 valve break off the ears on the block after the truck took a jump.

Doubt an impact would hurt the solidly mounted turbo - but I'd sure suspect the intercooler or other portions of the intake to be damaged - some sort of leak test thru the intercooler would be a good idea for starters...

Ok,

Got the wheels aligned today, looks good.

The guy at the shop showed me how far out of specification the wheels were.

He was amazed at the story that I told him and he was suprised the truck held together.



Anyhow, I heard him pulling away from the shop in my truck for a test drive, and yes I do need a new turbo.

It just sounds real tired, like it was rode hard and put up wet (thats Indiana speak!).

Just what I think I've heard......

I could swear that I heard the turbos don't have bearings per se. They ride on a cushion of oil from the supply line or something to that effect. Or a combination of both???



Disclaimer: Not stating fact just throwing something out there that the old brain may have mixed up. Any and all comebacks are welcome as I have a HY on the 02 that don't sound just right either.

noise ?

Is your heater hose connected to the rear of the block if so that could be the cause of the noise a increase of RPM will stop it could your air borne trip could have started it . MY 99 3500 had a what it thought of as a turbo noise was caused by the heater hose position added a longer hose and moved to plug in front of eng. could be possible . LOL Ron in LOUISVILLE KY
