turbo noice

does anybody's turbo sound different when cold. mine just started to make a whistle sound between shifts that is more noticeable when cold. it almost sounds like the silencer ring was removed. i have a scotty 3 filter, but has been installed for 15,000 miles. i just installed a egt probe in manifold several days ago, seemed to start several day after that. do i have a problem? what can i check.

Did you remove the file/shaving/chips from the manifold before you ran the eng.

If not, you may have wasted your Turbo. :--)

As long as you didn't build any boost right at startup after drilling and tapping your manifold and not retrieving the shavings then you didn't do any damage to your turbo from that. If you did build boost and hold it there then yes, you could have gotten some shavings in your turbo and caused some problems but it is not likely.



I would check to make sure you don't have any leaks in your intake tract from your filter to the intake horn on your turbo.

i drilled and tapped with the motor running and exhaust taped of 90%. all the shaving were hitting the hood. i did 3 others like this and never had a problem. the turbo does not sound damaged just really different. like it has a new air box or something.

I have seen engines literally come apart and not hurt turbine wheels if the motor was at low rpm's and the pieces that went into the exhaust were not very large.

The turbine wheel is a tough cookie made out of nickel steel.



Cold weather does and will have an effect on turbo noise.

Sure, if you didn't get it sealed it's possible. If that were happening, though, I would expect you to notice black soot somewhere on the body where the flow out of the probe hole impinges. Might take a few weeks to appear.



I doubt it's anything to be too concerned about. I know my truck is significantly louder overall in cold weather.

If it's a whistle that makes me suspect a tiny leak from the pyro probe fitting in the manifold.
