Pre-Engine Bomb - Auto Trans Mods???

I installed a Magnum Force intake system by aFe, and now have a louder turbo whistle, not to mention a loud whooshing sound when I lightly step on the gas. Any Ideas to quiet it down and keep the performance ? Also I am looking for a operating ram air hood that will function on my truck, Any ideas, and is it worth it ?

I had the same thing, it is offensively loud to me. The only way I can come up with to silence it is to enclose the filter somehow... .

I thought the same thing, so went back and bought the little baggie to go around it and do a little more filtering and it quited it down some. Did not go away, but a little quieter, and should keep the filter cleaner as well.

damn... .....

why would you want to quieten that down..... the first thing I did when I started reading Dave Fritz's page was get that "silencer ring " outa there. I cant wait to get me one of those Mega cannons, and the 4" straight pipe. :D Oo. Oo.

Buy yourself a big AFE and put that sucker in, if you like turbo noise you will not be disappointed, it sounds like you are driving a 727 in the cab:eek: .

If you like all that noise, why don't you just cut a 2' x 2' hole in your floor board! Either you are already deaf or you want to become that way fast?

Sure I like the pleasant sound of our Cummins, but I would like to keep my hearing also. I guess as one becomes older it becomes more of a priorty.

Had I known how loud the AFE filter made things inside the cab, I think I would have gone another way. I tried to box it in with some ridged insulation, but that didn't do anything.

Oh well, I think my next project is insulating the cab.

You will get used to the sound, just as you got used to the CTD the first couple of months you drove it. Soon the only time you will hear it is when you push the go-pedal. Then it is a pleasant reassuring kind of noise. Oo.

Come on guys play nice, I just wanted to know how to quiet things down, not start a war, and is it me or is there a post missing?

Now back to the subject, any ideas on a functional ram air hood ? And would the combination of closing off the aFe air box to work with the ram air quiet the cab noise ?

Hood and door seals

The factory seal at the top of the firewall is not very good, and not long enough. There are gaps at the outboard ends that have pieces of foam glued to the cowl to fill the gap. First make sure the factory seal is in place, glue in place if needed.

I added a 1"x2" dense foam seal behind the factory seal. I just set it behind the original seal on the plastic intake grill [base of the windshield] the hood holds it it place. I made the new seal long enough to go from fender to fender. This helped reduce my turbo whistle quite a bit.

Next I made an additional front door seal from the same foam, I glued it in place just in front of the factory door seal. I cut a notch in the foam for the dome light switch. This also helped a lot.

Next you have to insulate the intake trough under the windshield to reduce the noise in the intake to the heat and A/C system: more foam.

Hope this helps. Greg L The Noise Nazi

I two have quieted mine down a bit, but it was a side effect. My filter kept getting lots of back splash when driving in adverse conditions. Combination of lack of weather stripping and bug screens on the leading edge. I took a piece of sheet metal and cut it to box in the open sides of the heat shield, and along the top of the whole thing, I took a bicycle inner tube and filled it with some egg crate foam. This created a flexible seal around the hood. I kept the original snorkel from the fender so I know I still get plenty of flow from the snorkel, vents in the hood, and the bottom rear.

I have not seen a functioning hood scoop, but wish there was one. I have pondered making one, but I can’t figure out how to keep from pumping water in to the engine compartment when driving in weather. There is an after market scoop that comes in from under the bumper, or there abouts, but for the life of me, I can’t remember who makes it.

Greg, or Mr. "noise nazi",

Now you got me going. Where did you come up with the 1"x2" dense foam? I'm thinking I need to do this myself.

By the way, I didn't mean to offend any one with my comment. I just find it interesting how some like it quiet & some think their trk. can't be loud enough! Me, if I want it loud I'll just ride out back with my head hanging over the edge!:D

Roll down the windows!

Hi LRamey, I agree, if I want it loud, I roll down the windows and drive down and alley. But it sure is nice to roll the windows up and listen to the radio or CD at non lethal levels :)

I found my 1" think foam at a swap meet, so I don't know a supplier for it. What I bought was a large sheet, and I cut the 2"strips from this sheet.

Sorry I can't help, it is like the dense foam used for a waterskiing life vest, or for those professional knee pads flooring installers and roofers wear.

Take care, Greg L. the Noise Nazi.
