Put a VA duration box on yesterday, everything was great truck runs great, went to pass a car and noticed the turbo is whinning quite noticeably louder, only does it when you rev it up even on the stock setting, haven't pulled anything, just zipping around. I can't imagine anything being wrong with the turbo, I took the intake hose looose at the turbo and everything seems fine, it spins freely and looks good, any ideas???????????

Yeah the noise is not bad it's just I was concerned about it being different all of a sudde. I do feel better now, I spoke with Danny @ Precision Diesel and he assured me that it was probably just a change in some type of air movement due to a change in some variable within the ecm possibly caused by varying atmospheric conditions. He also said that to his knowledge no one had ever lost a turbo due to a VA box. Whew, I sure hope this is all correct.

Was that on the 50% or 100% setting? My truck sound totally different all around, turbo , exhaust etc. on the 100% setting.

100%, but it changed all of a sudden after running it on 100%, after further investigation, I had someone in the cab rev the motor a little while I was under the hood, there is a vibration in the turbo, I suspect too much clearence between turbo shaft and bearing, I doubt the VA box caused it, but it probably made it happen sooner than it would have normally, looks like I will have to take it in to get it fixed

Hey all, what's your opinion could the VA box have cause the bearing failure in the turbo, if that's not the vibration what could it be.

I put a TST Box on my truck and after 3 hard pulls on level 4-9 mine did the same thing. We were testing the transmission shift points. The noise was the compressor wheel hitting the compressor cover. Basically the turbo was done as it had eaten some of the compressor wheel. Take your intake off and look at your compressor wheel closely and look for shiney spots around the compressor cover where the wheel rides. You can also grab the compressor wheel nut and wiggle it to see how loose it is.

Sounds

bpenrod,

I agree with you, on the 50% it sounds a little different. On the 100% the exhaust and air really sound different.

Nathan, did you replace the turbo with another stock one, if so did it hold up to same setings on the TST. I guess my concern is, will a new turbo end up same as this one, or was this one defective.

I replaced it with a stock '03 turbo to get me home from Canada. Now I have a rather large single turbo on it. The best thing you could do is try to find a take off from someone else or buy a aftermarket turbo because the stockers will be expensive to buy new from cummins or dodge. I guess if you can stand to have your truck down for awhile then you could get it rebuild but after the original one failed so easily I gave up on trying to keep one in the truck. BTW I never ran the '03 stocker with the TST box. I left it off the whole time it was on the truck.

Is there some reason you would not pull the VA box and try to warranty the turbo? I agree it is a pricey item but I think there was a problem with it from the start. I find it hard to believe that the VA box ate the turbo!

I think the turbo was bad to begin with the VA box may have sped things up but the tolerances was probably not to spec. So warranty is going to cover this one. Danny at Precision diesel said that VA boxes don't eat turbos and they have sold a lot of them so we shall see. What do you all think about another stock turbo lasting.

I think it will last a long time provided you stay with the bomb in your sig. I'm crossing my fingers mine lasts thru the warranty period then i'll be ready for a good aftermarket unit.
