Too high of RPMs?

Howdy gents,

I just had a quick question regarding the noises that the turbo bearings might make when they are close to failure.

We all are used to that very high pitched whine under acceleration, but I'm starting to get a lower, deeper sounding whine while under way (more like the sound you can make by blowing over the top of a coke bottle!). Any thoughts, or do you just go by impeller axial and radial run-out and renew as necessary?

Thanks for the help,

Steffan Marley

I don't think that the problem is a leak. No change in performance, EGTs etc. Just a strange sound when the turbo winds up.

Mine was also making a "low" rumble, particular at idle just before shut down. Noticed the sound loudest at air filter. Pulled the intake and checked the lateral clearance and roughness. Too much.

Replaced the turbo with Cummins recon and noise gone. After 235,000 the bearings were going.

Cost was less that $400.

Replaced the injectors and now replacing injection pump (ouch)$$$$.
