I think I may have a chance to pick up a stock turbo off a 2nd gen (HX35??). Any thoughts? Would I be better off to save up for one from Piers?

TIA

Would I be better off?......

Depends on how much the HX35 is, what housing is on it, and what YOUR future BOMB plans are. If you plan to remain at or near stock (airfilter, exhaust, pump tweaks, no injectors), and the price is less than half a new PDRHX35-14/16, then I'd sya go for it. Be sure to get a boost elbow for the wastegate if it isnt off a 215hp engine. You'll want 20-25psi boost minimum from the 12cm housing, and stock 160-180s are set for around 15-18psi, or so I've been told.

If you plan to eventually go all out (not that I know anyone of that leaning), then I'd save up for a PDR HX35 or a HX35/40 hybrid (HX35 body and exhaust turbine/ housing; HX40 impellar wheel and housing- allows you to keep stock exhaust and get airflow of an HX40, or that's my understanding of it. )

If it is a HY35 of a 24v auto, I'd pass on it unless you plan to stay bone stock and have 3. 54s with an auto.

Ok, dumma$$ here (me, for you touchy feely types) just looked at your profile and saw the PODs. I'd personally save for the PDR unit, unless you think you can get the $$ back out of the HX35 when you decide to go bigger. Again, it all depends on the price and condition of the "new" one. You could buy one of the upgrade kits from HT Turbo and get a 35/40 hybrid. Definitely pass on a HY35.

I know I can get it for less than 1/2 what a PDR HX35 is..... probably way less. Don't know what housing is on it. What comes on them stock? I'm assuming I'll see some gains from it, but how substantial? I wouldn't say I'm going all out, I'll probably never see 400 hp, but I wouldn't say that 350 is out of the question eventually. I just ordered the PDR Fuel Pin, and 3000 GSK (should be here tomorrow) and I'm kind of thinking that's going to put me a little heavy on the fuel side, and was thinking this might get me back in balance as far as air goes. I hope

It will extend your efficiency map (I barely understand the concept, dont ask me to explain it- has to do with drive pressure vs boost).

Stock was a 12cm wastegated housing. The 12 will start to choke on higher RPM/ power levels, but with your 3. 54s, it wont be quite the problem it was with my 4. 10s. ACtually, I would doubt you'd see much improvement, and may suffer from the extra backpressure. Is your 14 gated or not? If it is gated, I'd say for sure you wont see much in gains. If the 14 is non gated, you might see some benefit, but personally, I'd still stick with the 14. There is such a thing as too small a housing.

My 14 is ungated. So if it does have a 12 on it, that may hurt EGTs even more right? Although the guy was getting like 450 hp out of it (and no, it's not worn out, you'd have to know the guy), surely it doesn't have the stock housing???

AJ

450 isnt out of the question with an HX35- it's just a better idea to upgrade. I'd venture to say it doesnt have the stock housing on it, though. Might be a 16cm. If it has the gated 12 on it, you might see some benefit over the non gated 14- the drive pressure is relieved by the wastegate, making it a little more efficient.
