the turbo started sounding funny when spooling up the other day. the whoosh is now more high pitched. while investigating, i pulled the intake tube off of the turbo and if i grab the end of the shaft, i can move it up and down. i dont think this is normal.

please help!!

Some play up and down is normal. But, having in and out play is not good! Look for signs of the turbine rubbing inside the intake as this is one of the first signs visible with a turbo on the way out.

Do the outside of the blades look as if they have been worn down any? Is there a line around the housing, where it looks like the blades have been rubbing?

You might pull the...

... air filter out and see if you have "sucked" the air horn into the bottom of the filter housing. With the "air horn" removed, it will make more noise.

Ob1kobi is right

A small amount of play is normal cause the shaft gets so hot, it needs room for expansion. If the shaft or bearing was too loose you'd probably experience an oil leak. Check the manifold for loose bolts, cracks,or the turbo exhaust inlet for leaks or looseness before you condem the turbo. Merv
