What exactly does a boost elbow do?

I have read that these 600's have a ECM controlled waste gate actuator. On my truck, there are no wires going to the waste gate. My question is this; If the waste gate is not connected to the ECM electrically, how does the ECM control the waste gate?

Thanks, Ed

The waste gate is not completely computer controlled. It works like any normal system till the ecm wants more boost then the pressure signal is bypassed internally to allow the gate to stay shut. The down side to this is once you reach the point where the ecm takes over the gate will not open allowing you to overboost if you have an aftermarket module.

The boost elbow has a controlled leakage which fools the ecm into thinking the boost is lower than it actually is.

On the 600's there is a solenoid on the turbo (to the left of the waste gate actuator as you are looking at it)which reduces the pressure to the actuator until about 24psi or so then it allows the gate to open (it actually causes an increase in boost at certain power levels) You will see the electrical connection on the solenoid which talks to the ecm. All this is bypassed when you use a boost elbow. TST is now using electronically controlled boost pressure in their R-47's and R-49's and all this is OBE.

Not quite ;) the solenoid is open or closed it is controlled by the ecm and it does not talk to the ecm
