I have a '97 2500. My question is what are the subtle signs that the turbo may be getting worn? I've got 168,000 on the clock & suspect that they may never live forever. I just want to be educated in knowing when a change may be needed. Is there any adjustment on the stock setup to open it up?

Im sure there have been early failures but I think most turbos will last hundreds of thousands of miles. Its rare to hear of a stock turbo failure. The only thing you can check for is bearing slop. If you hear the vanes hitting the housing after shutting of the engine thats a bad thing. If it ever locks up you will loose lots of power.

Yep--check the radial and end play. I check those twice a year at the same time I do other basic service items on the truck.

At 385,000 had a stuck waste gate and had to open the turbo to free it. Did an overhaul while it was open. Not much wear in there at all. As long as it gets clean air, oil and is allowed to cool down they go a long long time.
