Article in Lubes and Greases Regarding Extended Oil Drains

I recently purchased a hx35w turbo. the assy number is 3536160, the cust # is 3536161-0-09/5. can anyone tell me what it came off of ? thanks copterdoc

Looks like the standard Hx35 that is put on thousands of 5. 9 ctd's.

The exhaust housing is not from a late model dodge CTD. That is because of the Multi Mount Wastegate bosses.

Depending on what size the exhaust housing is it should work fine on a 5. 9 in a dodge. You may have to change the Wastegate mounting though depending on your truck.....

I will see if I can find out anymore specifics if you really want them?

CopterDoc, If the turbos' wheel are not rubbing the housings and it isn't leaking oil I would leave it alone. And if it does need rebuilt It's best to let the guy's who rebuild them every day to do it. The Hx35 on a CTD can spin at speeds over 120,000-150,000. If everything isn't perfect "BOOM".

I am assuming that you have experience with Turbine maint due to your sign name. I was a Maint Manager at Corporate Jets a FBO in scottsdale Az for ten years so I been around and spent some time in Copters... ... I am currently saving up for "A Star".

:D ;)

turbos

I've rebuild quite a few. This one has . 019 of play and . 020 is max allowable. I have an accelerometer setup to check the ips, so for I haven't ran into anything that I couldn't balance just by rotating the compressor wheel. (no grinding) thanks Copterdoc

P. S. stay away from the eurotrash, buy BELL

Sorry, Hope I didn't insult you in anyway.

I do like the BELL also. One Company I did consulting for had

a Late model Jetranger with all the Bells and whistles. Custom Paint Etc... .

My Roommate and Best friend for years flew several Astars. He managed all of there maintaince scheduling and fueling. So we "Ocassionally had to due some maintance Test Flights" :D

Flying 15-20ft off the deck at over 120 knots is some of the best fun I will ever have!

We would take Girls out for rides into the Sonoran desert for "PickNicks"... ... . Let's just say I have some Fond memories flying around in the Astars. They do have a roomy Cabin!;)

Eurotrash!?! Are you speaking from maintenance experience or do you work for bell. If you want to pick on a crappy helicopter company, I vote Enstrom. I haven't met a mechanic yet who liked them!:D

PS: We are currently looking into a (eurotrash) EC-130;)

No I don't work for bell. Just my humble opinion. I've been working on bells and as I said eurotrash for 18 years and I have found that bell makes a much stronger and more reliable product. With the exception of the mbb-105 (which is built like a tank) Most aerosplats and especially the new ec-120's and ec-130's are at best what I would describe as fragile aircraft. They might make sutable news crew or sightseeing choppers, but that is about it. (light duty) copterdoc

What Did I start Now!!??

A TDR First..... Helio WARS!!!!!!!:-{}

Personally If you want a Stout built Copter I vote for a Robinson the high performance R-22 Model of course!;) Oo. :D

Copterdoc, Your input is rather useful as our company is looking into an ec-130. I don't have much experience with eurocopter as I have spent most of my aviation career in and around BELL's and MD's. Both of which I have found to be fairly tough machines! The new euros sure look pretty but I am not familiar with their maintenance track record. Thanks for your input.

PS: My personal favorite, MD500's

Kwikkurt, the robinsons definitely have alot going for them, but I am fairly sure a Stout build is not one of them!!!!:D :D

PPS: Sorry this thread is so off track!!!!!!

ec-120, ec-130

Since we are so far off track here is a little more. Find someone in your area who is running them and have a good sitdown. Try and find someone with a few hours on an airframe not a new aircraft. on both aircraft the doors suck. they are easly broken and the fit and finish sucks. the wind screens and windows are structural. no popout vents allowed. the air con cannot be mel'ed. if it goes out it's grounded. The windscreens often debond and need to be changed, which is a 3 day job. The tail boom is lined with tin foil(no $#!7) on the inside and is a monocome setup(one solid piece) any dent or scrape is non reparible. You change the whole tailboom. The battery is placed over the tailboom/ airframe junction point. Not a good place to have corrosive battery acid. Eurocopter will not allow you to split the engines. if you have a single problem with the compressor, gearbox, or turbine you pull the whole engine. On a 206 you can split a allison 250 series engine in the field and change any section. I could go on and on, there are many, many other items I could point out. The bottom line is make sure you get the whole picture first before you buy. Eurocopter pulls alot of people in with a low cost product, but they keep a tight reign on the parts supplies. There are no aftermarket or outside suppliers. They do not allow it. sometimes parts have to come from france and that can meen two weeks of non rev time. I quit I am going on and on. I quit. copterdoc

Thanks again for your information. The concerns you raised have definitely got me thinking, expecialy the engine having to be sent in as a whole. We just compleated a hot section on our 500 and it was a piece of cake to pop off the hot section and ship it out for overhaul. The previous owener of our 500 sold it in order to buy a 120. He had the 500 for about 12 years and now has about 3 years on the 120. Hopefully he may have some insight on any problems he encountered switching to a eurocopter. Thanks again, I will definitly need to do a lot more research!

Kevin

Let's see. The R-22 let's you split the Engine and Trans in the Field. And Airconditioning has never grounded one! (That I know off!);) And I think the parts are all USA?

I Don't know about you two but it's keeps looking better to me!

P. S. Just tell me to shut up! Kurt
