Could someone tell me the size and type turbo stock on an 02 5-sp. ,& do you really need a wastegate. Also what mods can you do to this turbo?

Thanks, Ponz

Holset HX35w, 12mc2 turbine housing. Wastegated stock for ~20psi. Aftermarket boxes like the Edge stuff will come with a drilled elbow that replaces the stock one. Up to ~36psi boost is on the compressor map and can help EGT temps.

you do NOT want to remove the wastegate. The wastegate saves your life when you get a heavy foot!! lol, as for upgrades depending on how much green you got you can either buy a new turbo ($1200+) or you can purchase a new compressor housing and wheel and have your turbine housing machined to match. run you about 350 at a place called High Tech Turbo in Salt Lake City, Utah. the website is HTTurbo.com, give them a look, really good products for the price.

Does anyone have any feedback on the 4" turbo elbow that Banks sells? Are there any other 4" elbows available and are they worth it power wise?

Ponz - you seem to have a boost elbow and a anti-defueling device (boost fooler) already installed, at least thats what it says in your signature. What are you trying to do?? What kind of boost numbers do you see now? Do you want more power (silly question)? If you want more power you need to add some fuel... bigger injectors or a box of some kind. Just messing with the turbo will not gain you anything.

I am going to give you a different answer than you are looking for, but the result will be much better. Ditch the Superchip and get an Edge Juice w/Attitude or Smarty, better yet, both and stack them. You will also need a new turbo, an ATS Aurora 2000 would be nice, or something a little bigger, HTT and II are also excellent turbos. A set of Jammer III injector tips (install on your factory injector bodies if you still have them, save a little money that way), or DD3's, Mach 3's, etc. Stay away from the banks products, overpriced and underbuilt. If you get a new turbo get an HX40 style outlet, negates any need for the banks elbow. If you look at a lot of the exhausts that hookup to the HX35, they have a small necked down area where they connect to the exhaust flange, why pay money for a bigger elbow only to have it push through a smaller section anyway?

I've been told that the Banks larger than stock elbow and larger down pipe will free up the exhaust better. Also I'm told that you can replace the compressor wheel of the HX35 and gain more boost. Right now I get 24-25psi

without the Superchips. I'm waiting on my new lift pump before I add the Superchips as I've dropped down to 10psi fuel pressure. I don't have unlimited funds to use and I'm trying to pick what I need. If it were different I'd have a set of towing twins. Ponz

If it were me I would not waste my time with the Power Elbow. If you are looking for a better $ to improvement ratio then I would also get off the Banks website. Banks stuff is good quality and for the most part works as advertised, but it is expensive for what you get.

My advice is to not do anything right away, just read TDR a bit more before deciding on anything. There are more cost effective ways to go about doing what I think you are trying to do if you just research a bit more.

FWIW at 25 psi boost with the HX35 that turbo is really running in its sweet spot, especially for towing. IMO that is where you want to run it at (You're already there!). You can push it harder if you like. Maybe up to the 35 psi range, but might not really gain what you expect to gain.

Everyone seems to get caught up in the "more boost is better" mind set, but it might not always be 100% true.

Good idea you have to get a more reliable fuel supply system going before you move on.

read up ! good stuff here ! decide what u want to spend and do long run ,then weigh options noting each parts strengths/weaknesses figure on what u can/cannot live with and then bomb it. u never get what u need impulse shopping!

I agree, take you time, do lots of research, set goals for where you want to end up power wise, what you wanna do with the truck, how much you wanna spend, etc... . good luck:)

Plus, if you ever have a problem with your banks products you will not get any help from them! They have the worst reputation for customer service! All they want is your money, aftet that you are on your own!

Thanks

Thanks for all the info, waiting for the weekend to hopefully fix my fuel pressure problem. Guess I need to save a few more coins.

daaanngg!!! man thats harsh!

Harsh but true! I looked into banks when I first got my truck, the salesman would call me couple timea a week to ask if I was ready to order! I told him I couldn't afford to do anything now, but he kept calling after I told him no! I finally had to tell him to stop calling, he was wasting minutes on my cell phone, I only got a couple more calls after that!

There are also numerous posts on here where people have had problems with banks products and could receive absolutely no customer support from them. My persoanl favorite was when the guy at banks was eating his lunch on the phone while the customer was getting nowhere fast.

I have a buddy with an 01 3500 doing some of these exact upgrades right now. I'll let him explain:

A couple of the posts talked about High Tech Turbo and that's exactly where my stock turbo is today. I sent it to them for an upgraded compressor wheel and housing (stage 3 kit on their website). It leaves the turbine housing alone so that it bolts back on to my factory (actually, dealer installed) Jake brake. This way I don't have to fool around with other elbows, etc. A bit more restrictive on the downpipe than aftermarket, but the dual stacks afterwards make up for it a bit. The HTT people really know their stuff and are reasonably priced. Whole job for upgraded compressor wheel and housing, rebuild rest of turbo w/ new seals, bearings, and cleaning is $550. A lot better than the $1200+ for a new one. I'm putting on 110hp injectors and a TST box and Smarty to give more fuel with the newfound air I'll have. All this to tow a 33ft 5th. I shopped around for 3 weeks for turbos and came to like the HTT people the best. They shipped it back to me today and I'll have it installed late next week. Call them.

Ken

P. S. To answer the question you might ask next-no it wasn't hard to take the turbo off. Went rather well considering I've never done it before.

In my sig you can I have an HX-35, Banks power elbow, and superchip. My truck came with the HY-35 (9cm exhuast housing) and would only boost about 18-20 psi. I got a deal on an HX that didn't have the back flange or elbow to bolt onto the stock exhuast. So i bought the Banks power elbow for $263 i think. It wasn't until after I got the elbow, bolted it on the HX, and then started swapping the HY that i found out that i could of used the same elbow off my HY. But i went ahead and used it. I would say it has pretty good quality and fit. I wouldn't really recommend it as a must power enhancer but if you need an elbow and a down pipe its a pretty good deal. My HX will pump out about 29-30 psi with or without the Superchip. With the HY and the chip set on High perf i could only get the egts to 1100 by pegging the truck at 110mph for a minute or so. When i swapped to the HX i could only get it up to about 850-900 beating the snot out of it.

It doesn't sound like your trying to build a HP/Trq monster so i dont think you would really see a noticeable difference to make it worth the money... . My two cents.

No more than 850-900??? I can hit that just blipping the throttle! I have pegged 1350 floored at 65 mph, Juice on 5x5!
