1) When the turbo goes, is it usually the compressor to exhaust side?

2) Are their external symptoms?

Thank You

I've busted an HX-35 and an HX-40. I'm working on an H2E now. :)

Both broke between the front bearing and the compressor wheel.

The shaft on my two turbos is very large where the exhaust turbine rides as well as where the bearings ride. The shaft necks down significantly (maybe 50%) where the compressor wheel rides. The small shaft diameter is where both of mine broke.

There were no warnings or signs of danger. Just a sudden pop, followed by a lot of grinding and white smoke.

The boost pressure blows the pieces of compressor wheel back into the air cleaner and it's very important to replace the air cleaner after losing a turbo.

I'm sure there are other types of failures, but this is what I personally have seen.
