I have about 125k on my truck now with the mods listed in my sig. About a month ago I busted a down pipe and needed to order a new one. So I decided its about time rebuild my turbo's. They have about 100k on them. I am going to swap out my k31 primary turbo for an S400 as per nathan @ mpi advice. I just think I have outgrown my setup now. EGT's seem to climb high relatively quick. I'm hoping with an s400 with 74/102 compressor and 96/88 turbine will still spool very well and keep egt's in check and help with the top end.

While taking my turbo's out, I saw this on the PS62. Is this oil coking? There is some up and down shaft play. Just enough to see it moving. Pretty sure I will need a rebuild kit for a PS62. Are they a base s300? I can find lots of rebuild kits for them as well Is my CHRA shot on this turbo? Where can I get a chra if I need one? The K31 looks pretty similar the PS but there is no shaft play at all.

Thanks in advance!

What do you use for an oil filter?

Oil Coking is on the bearing, not the compressor blades.

Do you have an exhaust brake?

Yes it is an oiled filter. It was really disgusting. Instead of trying to clean it I tossed it and bought another one. They come pre-oiled.

I can look into it. I pretty much thought all the cone type afe, airaid etc... are all oiled filters? What do you reccomend that would fit my setup?

There are more and more dry filters available. Donaldson and Amsoil have a bunch that cross to many of the oiled filters.

Wow, that's ugly, wonder what the charge air cooler looks like? Could be why egt's are getting out of hand. Just my opinion, but that looks like more debris than an oiled filter would cause, more like a breach in the intake.

I'm guessing you never did reach Jason/NWC ?

Didn't really find any dust, dirt, oil in any of the charge air tubes. Could be an intake breach though. I did find some rust on the outside of my charge air pipe though, and I noticed too that the o-ring on one side is flatter than the rest of the ring. Don't know if it was not quite sitting right Good time just to go through everything

LOL no I never did get a hold of Jason @nwc Called everyday for like a week and just get his VM. I did get my downpipe taken care of though. Now I'm looking for a new charge air pipe

Was this the first look after 100k miles? Not dissing, just trying to figure if this happened over time or recently? Doesn't take much of a leak to allow unwanted debris. I had a dry Amsoil with a slight tear that left just a slight film of dust in the intake tube, only used it while servicing my AFE so I lucked out.

Jason is a great guy, and just recently saved me a lot of grief when I lost a seal in my S474, however he can be a difficult person to reach, unless you drive up to his shop and catch him there. I know he answers his phone, because it was ringing non-stop while I was chatting with him, not sure how he manages to accomplish anything other than answer his phone...

No I have taken a look on more than a few times. This time was a little longer than usual. I did notice some fraying in the netting of the filter from rubbing the inner fender wall Could be from that. or somethng else. So sfound I jsut go with a rebuild kit for the ps62 or try to find a chra?

Are there any good places people recommend for turbo rebuilds?

I had the guys at XSBoost Turbo's LLC send me their remanufactured HE351CW with the billet shaft and 70X60 turbine-upgrade. I had it installed yesterday on a new BD 2-piece exhaust manifold. My journal seals were leaking oil so it was time for a new turbo (my truck is a 2004. 5 with 180k miles on it). Truck runs great... . boost runs up to 40psi (according to my boost-gauge). Quick response off-throttle and seems to run about 50-75 degrees cooler around-town. I like the sound of the BD exhaust manifold too. A little 'throatier'. The turbo was $895 plus $200 core-charge which they refund when you send the core back in the same box their reman unit came in. I'm a very happy camper. Here's their website
https://www.xsboostturbochargers.com/
Call their shop and talk to Dave. Nice chap. Calm... helpful... unlike other turbo-shops I talked to prior to selecting XS.

I get where you are coming from Axe. I called/emailed some other turbo repair shops to not get a response, or one place actually asked me to email him, so I did but did not receive a response. I actually did a search and came across a post of yours! I looked up some places an the web and decided to call XS boost. Dave actually answered, I told him I was looking to rebuild my PS62. Asked basically what it entailed and what upgrades he could do to it to make it better. They got my turbo just today, I am hoping to hear something from them tomorrow on what they found. I know my turbine housing was cracked in 4 spots and there was some up and down movement in the impellor shaft. So It definitely needed some love. Its going to go over a new S475, so I will need everything I can get to help get the s475 spooling quick.

Was going to get an HE351cw turbo remade from XS boost. But Source Automotive said that their turbo piping kit with the S475 that I have would cause the drive pressures to be too high. So I am going to do with a rebuild of my PS 62 which is a base S353 turbo. They are going to upgrade the turbo to an S363with a billet wheel. I also just realized that aparaently I have an HX40 (4 inch) exhaust on this turbo. What I need is an HE351 (4. 4 inch) to mate with my new downpipe. So I will need a new exhaust housing for this turbo to work.

Does any one know a place I can find new exhaust housings?

TIA!

Any good rebuild-shop should have all types of housing 'cores' on the shelf... did you ask Dave @ XSboost Turbo's if they could accommodate your needs?
They're a full-service rebuild-shop and should be able to.

BTW... . 10 days after I mailed my turbo 'core' back to XSBoost Turbo's, I got my refund through Paypal.
Great guys to deal with.
I've been running their reman-turbo for a couple of weeks now without any problems.
Spools quick... runs cool. What more could a guy ask for?
