Well the CDT finally decided to cost me more than fuel!! Left NC 1st of May, been to AK and go back to ID this week (11,000 mi). The whole time I kept hearing a "Chirping" from the turbo area when pouring on the power, or using the EB. Thought it was most likely one of the flex couplings leaking with pressure applied. Noticed a slight loss of power when climbing a few long steep hills in and around Hells Gate on the way to Boise. Tightened a couple accessible clamps on the intake side, took it for a test drive no change. Stopped at a local campground in Meridian after hearing same. Checked the internet, found Gem State Diesel Turbo right down the street!! They squeezed me in for a diagnosis, found oil and metal filings on the intake side of the turbo! Bummer, new turbo needed, $4500 R&R! 125k miles and it costs this much to keep it alive, I'm sorta disappointed in the durability of this major component of this engine. Am I being too judgmental?:(

Yes these trucks are very expensive to fix and maintain due to the blue tec emission system. They should never go out this early in the game.
You made it a lot further than my truck - the actuator on the turbo went at 45k miles which means a new turbo was on order. This problem also cost a dpf filter. I was lucky enough to find a dpf filter used on Craigslist. It was a take-off from a 2012 truck.
Many would consider this heresy, but I consider my truck to be not much better than my brother's old 2005 Ford with 6.0 engine. He was on his second turbo replacement at 50k miles,.and was smart enough to sell that truck. At least I'm only on my first turbo replacement.

Yeah I thought it would be something else hoping not to get into such a pricey item so soon. Plus apparently these 6.7 units are not available as re-man yet!!??

I was hearing the same noise out of my 07.5 pulling through the mountains around Virginia. Started this morning when I left the campsite then grew on the way home to Ohio. Was hoping it wasn't a turbo, I'll check it in the a.m. Not looking forward to r/r a turbo at 94k!

So why are these failing so early anyways? I never had a turbo issue on my 04.... I also think those prices are high. However labor to r/r may be wrapped into that as well. Does anyone offer o/h kits?

Cost sounds very high! I think you could have a HE451 installed for that price.

Call Pat at Big Twin Diesel in Meridian and see what he has to say.

I've never dealt with Gem State, or heard of them, everyone take their Cummins to Pat.

I live 6 miles from Meridian.

I can't tell by your post, hoping the work isn't done yet.

Well, I hope this ends well, they received the turbo Saturday and is going in today. The costs is for R&R plus an oil change and drilling the manifold for a pyro probe for later installation while the turbo is off the the truck. I wish I had known about Big Twin prior, so far these guys seem OK, they have a lot full of Diesel most of them Rams.....Dunno? Thanx for the input.

4500 for a turbo ????!!!!???? I'd be pulling all that crap off the motor and be putting a regular manifold (BD, ATS< etc) on there with a turbo that doesn't require all that upkeep... cleaning every 70k or whatever, etc. Neighbor had his replaced under warranty at just 75k.

Well al of the shooting is done. Spent A but load of money on the turbo and the EGR valve ($ 700+), they still could not locate the chirping, but saw what looked like small gap in the back of the #6 port of the exhaust gasket. It was a decision of locating and buying anther manifold once this one comes off or living with the annoying chirp. So here I am heading home $5k lighter in the wallet and still listening to it. I'll take care of it in NC later. Not a fun week. Then, yesterday while cruising down hwy 101 near Cape Perpetua, the rear wheel and drum decides to part company with the axle and set down on the side of the road! Fortunately I had all of the parts needed for a roadside repair, but frustrated the wife a little with all of the mechanical debacles going on. Maybe it's time to get off the road for a while.

That road is narrow in places, glad you got it off the road safely.

Just tuning in. I had my turbo replaced last week, luckily under warranty. Then, naturally--when it rains it pours, I came out to a truck that wouldn't start. In go two new batteries. Plus, the new turbo is howling under certain conditions. So, it's at the Dodge house again while they "adjust" the turbo. Any theories on the howling?

My fathers '97 12v has 300,000 miles on the odometer and he's still rockin' his original turbo! If my truck goes that distance, at this rate, it'll take me 6.5 turbos!!

Best,

GCP

Dealer just replaced turbo at 56K. Truck is out of warranty by 6months. Dodge agreed to a $2 K Good Will offering and Dealer had to do the work under warranty labor rates and designated tine limit. Original estimate (before Dodge agreed to help) was $4,400 but final cost to me was $1,400. So if you have what you believe to be a premature failure of the turbo it would pay to check with Dodge customer relations for consideration. The symptoms was a whistle sound under acceleration and a more pronounced sound when using the EB. Mechanic was unable to determine the type of failure as there were no codes. I experienced no performance problems during the failure and replacing the turbo solved the noise problem.

WOW! did you ever time that right! I'm at 125k, i doubt they would have even discussed warranty. I have the same sound before and after the turbo swap. I'm due for an oil change soon so I think I'll spend some quality time staring at the bottom looking for potential sources, I'm thinking of placing a microphone in various places to help locate it as well, create a playback loop with an Ipad and go that direction.

You deifine your sound as chirping. My sound was more like a whistle or a whooshing sond so my cause may have been different then yours and maybe that is why replacing the turbo didn't solve your problem
