My Dodge service dealer wants to install a new turbo in my 07. 5 early generation 6. 7 Cummins. Thankfully it will be a warranty repair. That said, I'm looking for any information that will help me be better aware of what's to be done. The service advisor doesn't really have a grasp on what's going on so I hope to hook-up with the mechanic who will actually do the work prior to letting them have the truck.

With all the problems with the early turbos, a complete replacement is not necessarily a bad thing. I probably don't need to worry but I want to smarten-up about this and then do what I can to make sure I don't have to do this again. If there is a next time, it will be on my dime!

Thanks.

I had the turbo replaced in sep'09 @ 21. 5k, dealer had my '08 mega for 3 days. I was ready to delete at that time but then decided warranty is a good thing. Holset makes the turbo, on their site they claim air & oil are the causations of turbo failure. Of course you want to warm up & cool down. Tech claims that it was the early programs/flashes that lead to turbo failures. Of course the latest flash will make this new turbo work fine? Will see.

Good luck. Wonder if the egr particles in the oil did it in? Who knows.

Hey John,

I've had ongoing relationship with my check-engine light for some time. Dealer talked about a cleaning last Fall but was shy to go ahead having not done it before. I asked them to check for codes last week when it was in for regular service and they came back saying they wanted to replace the turbo. I haven't had a chance to speck with the service technician just yet to learn what code(s) may have come up. I suspect the infamous 2262.

Make sure the dealer orders the AD level turbo. If your dealer is large he may have an AB or AC turbo on the shelf.

Definitely a small dealer. I'm heading over there this afternoon to hopefully talk with tech about the work. I'll try and find out which turbo they've received.

Thanks.

What are the features of AB, AC, and AD turbo? I had a replacement quite a few months back, think it was the AC that I got.

Not exactly sure as they look the same on the outside, but I'm sure there are tweaks to the insides to improve it's performance.

The "AD" turbo has a stronger actuator motor and also the slide ring has a coating on it to help with soot and carbon build-up.

MullenaxM & sag2:

Well, talked my way into the locale dealer's parts dep't. to rummage through the box with my new turbo and part # has the AD designation. Also talked with the technician doing the work and he walked me through the cleaning of the EGR system and flash updates to be done. Done what I can to make this go right. I think the tech was happy to see someone taking an interest in their vehicle and in his trade. Nice to see.

Work being done tomorrow. Thanks for your input.
