Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) NV4500 question

In search of more noise, I came across some threads thismorning on removing my turbo ring. So excited for such an easy project I ran to the garage thismorning in my pajamas and removed the excess weight. I can't really tell any difference. But looking at the intake it looks way more restrictive- not having the nice flowing funnel to the impeller. Does this make a difference? Is its only purpose to quiet turbo noise? I'm sure if I had a muffler it would be more noticeable, I think I can hear a little more HIGH pitched noise. ?

Yank out the snorkle between the fender and airbox, then drill some holes in the airbox below the filter, really swiss cheese it. If your airfilter has a foam prefilter, pull that off. That should make some more noise. Or get a BHAF, AFE or other high flowing filter.

If i change my filter for mileage and noise, is a whole filter housing with element the way to go or is like a k&n or amsoil filter in stock housing the same difference?

Thanks for the input.

I spose I could always tear off my foam prefilter, cottage cheese the heck out of stock airbox and if its no good then buy the fancy stuff!

Go cheap first, you might like it. For best go with the open element setups, you dont really need it unless you're truck requires more air than the stock setup can supply but they look cool and the sound is there.

Makensmoke, to answer your original question..... there is no difference in performance with the ring or without. With the silencer ring removed and a K&N in the box with the snorkel removed and 3 four inch holes in the bottom = lotsa whistle. (And lotsa smiles. ):D

if u want to do it the correct way, put the silencer ring back in and put an afe mega cannon for more noise and air flow.

I agree whole-heartedly. It just not that cheap to go buy a open element kit. FWIW, with a open element and no silencer ring the truck was way too loud for "me". Ended up putting the silencer ring back in and was happy with just the open element. Different strokes for different folks. :)

and this is coming from the go who just put an hx 55 on their truck, uh huh, ya... . bet that trubo doesn't make that much noise, lol

Toss out the silencer ring and toss in the AFE megga cannon!:D

If you want noise you will get it this way. (I did) :D :D

LMAO, actually the HY and probably the stock HX-35 run high boost just driving down the freeway. You have the whistle all the time. With the larger turbo I run under 10 psi so I don't get the whistle till I get on it. I can live with that. Since I have a cold my ears are plugged up, and that coupled with my 50% hearing loss..... lets just say I can hardly hear the whistle right now. :( My buddy says its there though. :D
