Everything I have is current in my sig except a Quad rail psi/fuel psi gauge that I just ordered, so the the question is what turbo. I drive mainly unloaded but tow my boat 4K and my buddies boat 7. 5K every couple of weeks. So I would like a nice middle of the road turbo with a good spool and able to tow but more airflow. Currently I'm thinking I'm running out of fuel when I get on it from a dead stop because the boost will fall off and EGT's climb quickly, but if I roll into it at let's say 65 and run her up to 90+ boost stays even and EGT's are in check. So after I figure that out with the rail psi gauge I need to address the turbo. Choices I'm considering are the II PS62, SPS62, HTT HTB2, 71, or the Garrett powermax stage 2 or 3. I'd really like to know if the extra coin the Garrett's charge are worth it because they seem like a nice kit, also it's kind of hard to compare them due to different size marketing- A/R vs. mm. Any input will be greatly appreciated. Thanks Ryan.

My choice would be the SPS62, or if I could afford, the HTT 62/71/13 SS.

I have had an SPS62, nice towing turbo, with your mods, it will also spool fast with an empty truck. The HTT would be an improvement.

I'm in a similar spot. but with 125hp injectors. I would be supprized it ur running out of fuel. . generaly if your egts climb quick (like mine do) the stock turbo just dosent have enough to keep up but at highway speeds it tends to keep up decent untill ur pulling 8k or more. i have to keep mu TQ on the smart on 2 just so i dont black out the road behind me, but the injectors make a big diffrence

You'll never get on top of that SPS with just a smarty for fueling. I don't think you're in need of a turbo upgrade yet but if you plan on going for a little more horsepower in the near future, then what is your goal? If you don't plan on adding any more fuel in the future I would stick with a phat shaft 62/65/14 or a HTT62/65/13ss. Good turbo for towing and just fine for daily driving.

so with slight fueling increases like a safe programmer, will the HTT62/65/13ss spool quicker then stock on the way up, or only as quickly as stock??

I'd put it in the "like stock" category. I can tow on smarty 3 w/o exceeding 1250*. That's on the long grades on I77 Northbound in VA (Fancy Gap). On my last trip I even ran with no timing advance and still held it under 1300. It came with the wastegate set to 40 psi and I haven't messed with it. I have set overboost code once on that same grade when I got behind traffic and slowed way down. When I dropped to 4th and spun the RPMs up it peaked at around 45 psi momentarily and I guess anything over 40 causes the code even with the smarty. No big deal, just cleared it and life was good again. my only complaint about the smarty is the low end smoke when timing is turned up which is why my last trip was run w/o timing advances. Interestingly it was the best mileage I had seen on that trip (11. 2 running 70 - about 1 mpg better than normal) but one trip is not a real indicator.

With your mods wouldn't you be better off running the revo software without the TNT? I'm just wondering because iwas going to download the TNT sofware also but after doing some research found that the TNT is best left to highly modified rigs. My buddy has pretty much the same mods as me and he had the TNT software. We raced as usual and i beat him on SW9 Revo no TNT. We were always dead even. He switched back to the Revo and we were dead even again. I don't know if he actually made less power(definitely more smoke) or if he didn't have the settings quite right.

Also with your mods do you really need a turbo? I tow 23,000 Gross twice per week and on SW9 and my EGT does not go past 1150 climbing a hill. To me it just sounds like you don't have enough fuel or tow enough to warrant spending all that money on a turbo. But if you want to i'd say do it right the first time and pick up a twin kit using your stock turbo.

Thanks for all of the input guys! I have the TNT because my trans builder and guy that I bought my Smarty from said it was smoother. I may download the regular software and give it a try. As far as the fueling the truck seems to be quicker and cooler if I am real smooth with the throttle input and it holds boost 42-45 (another reason for thinking about a turbo!!!). If I just stab it the boost falls off to around 35 and my temps are at 1450 by 60 mph, so I was thinking I may be draining the rail (I'll soon find out with the rail psi gauge). Anyhow I'm just trying to get her a bit more dialed in before throwing money at it and I value the experiences good or bad from all here. Thanks again, Ryan.

You need to play with a Common rail Smarty. This is no VP program.

Slower than stock. Not laggy by any means but being larger it will be slower. I'd recommend HTT's 62/14

Your defueling could be a boost fooler problem or an egt cutback or ..... Likely software related. Does it vary on different programs?

So how does the htt62/14 compare to stock in everyday driving... basically, what are the advantages, if any, of going to one, with mostly evryday driving with small loads, and/or occasionally pulling 5k-10k on a flatbed trailer"

Eventually (after my extended warranty is up) I would like to upgrade the turbo, exhaust manifold AND intake manifold (l already have the GDP horn), if it will let the engine breathe more, spool quicker, and lower egts. I still cant yet decide betweem the smart jr. or DD stage 1 sticks for more fuel once the warranty is up. Am leaning towrads the sticks, cause they just might need some maintenance after 100k anyway... at least that's what I am telling my wife... ;)

Would the htt 62/14 that you are talking about help or go with all that... ?

waste gate setting?

Update, 23k and change with the new Quadzilla gauge. But boost drop off is still prevalent? Any ideas

What is your waste gate setting on the smarty? Mine will damn near hit 40psi then drop off and stay around 35psi with the wase gate on stock setting. With waste gate off, I can hold around 42psi on my stock turbo and keep it there

Just an idea

For light towing applications and mild power upgrades (into the realm of 400-450hp) the 62/14 is a formidable contender. You'll loose a little sustained boost at constant rpm but with the increased airflow from the compressor and through the turbine your egt's will actually be lower.

If a guy tells me he wants to be able to easily tow his trailer without thinking about it but needs a little more egt relief than a stock turbo provides this is among the options I recommend. If you get much bigger you start giving up rpm on the bottom end waiting for it to spool.

Wastegate is set on off I'll see 42-45 if I roll into it but when I give her the coal quickly boost drops off to 35ish. Acceleration is still there but EGT's climb quickly so I wouldn't think its defueling but I may be wrong. Started noticing the same symptom with the Juice before I removed it. Also I got the fuel psi sender with the quad and it seems it only works with the stock banjo fittings and not my Airdog's direct fitting. I'll take a look today as it was late when I installed it(dark).
