Turbo shaft endplay?

I have a used HY35W I plan on putting on a 4BT. I noticed that I can grab the end of the intake shaft with my fingertips and move it side to side about 1/16" total distance. I don't feel it hitting the housing when I move it over. I bought it cheap off E-bay from someone who said it did not have more than 20-30K on it. Should the bearings be replaced?

hmm... that does seem a little excessive, but i do not have the spec sheets handy for the tolorances

that's not end play... that's radial play or "wiggle", and it's totally normal...



axial play or "end play" is the ability to move the shaft in and out, and it's totally BAD!!

Are you saying that it's not a problem because in rotation the shaft tries to self center?

yep, the oil forms a "wedge" and the shaft floats.

FYI they call me the Diesel Freak at work because I'm always bragging about the advantages of diesels. They still don't believe me that diesels are not daddy's same old slug anymore.
