Exactly what is the purpose of the ring? I've heard some say that no difference (hp or noise) is experienced with out it. Are part of the turbo vanes covered by the ring? Does the boost increase with removal? EGT increase or decrease? Does the service manual refer to it as a silencer ring or is that a term applied by TDR members?

Silencer ring

It's purpose is precisely what is says, by reducing the audible whine on spool-up of the turbo, to a level which DC believe is acceptable. It's inclusion or removal does not enhance or reduce your available HP or torque. It's a personal preference, whether you remove it or leave it where it is.

A word of warning though, if you do decide to remove it and then at some point later decide to put it back, because for instance the audible whine on spool-up is louder than you feel comfortable with, then please make sure that you reinstall it correctly - you don't want it to "accidentally" disappear  down the turbo mouth and shatter the blades of the turbine.

Do yourself a favor and search on the TDR forums for pictures of the before and after and then make your own mind up.
