Turbo Silencer ring Yes or no?

I have a new 2003 HO 6spd. I have read the all posts about removing the "ring" to make the turbo sing louder. Some say that you will loose performance if you take it out. I would like to remove it but only if there is not any performance loss. Has any one used a dyno to find out for sure? Will it be real loud? I plan to keep using the stock air filter .
 
No dyno results to know for sure, but I can't tell much if any difference in power since I popped mine out. It's noticably louder, but not screaming loud like I thought it might be. I like it, and am glad I did it.

Sounds awesome at lower speeds, but annoyed me at highway speeds (75mph). Too loud to easily carry on a conversation, potential hearing loss, etc. It also masks the growl of the Cummins - no good at all:D . I put it back in, and it will stay there.

Taking it out did not have any effect on performance on my 03. It is not that loud at all compared to my 95. I also removed that plastic nonsense in the straight plastic tube before the turbo. I do a lot of highway and the whine is barely there.

Silencer ring removal

The silencer ring is really a deflector of the air in the ported part of the shroud in the intake of the turbo. Removing the ring changes the air flow into the turbo thus making it louder. Also by changing the air flow you will effect performance of the turbo slightly as we have found when experimenting with the Turbo Air Guide (TAG) The silencer ring does help to direct the air into the center portion of the turbo and does make a noticeable difference when used with the TAG. I would leave the silencer in place.
 
ring out and k&n filter makes a good combo,,,,,, if you going to buy a million mile truck,,,,,,,,, buy a million mile filter
 
Take it out. Drive for a few days, loaded / unloaded.



If you can tell the difference, put it back in. Simple as that.

Total un-install/re-install time: about 15 minutes.



FWIW- I agree with Car_Nut, but a quick search for "silencer ring" and my user name will reveal all.

If you send a letter to the people who build the Cummins engine and ask them, they'll tell you the silencer ring is there to please customers of Dodge Ram pickups powered by Cummins engines. The same engines is other applications don't have them.

They'll also tell you that a K&N filter isn't recommended for use in the Cummins. Using one won't void your warranty with DC but if you have any engine damage that's caused by the filter, then it'll be up to you to pursue K&N for the repair costs. K&N states in writing that they will not be liable for any damages caused directly or indirectly by use of their filter. You might want to read that million mile warranty very carefully.

The dyno proves there's no gains to be had with a K&N over paper. Paper, K&N, or no filter at all produces the same numbers.
