I have searched for info on this and haven't had much luck. Can somebody please tell me how to remuve the silencer ring, and if there is any benefit to doing it. Will it increase airflow or is it simply done just to make the turbo louder? And lastly, is there a negative or downside to doing this? If someone could enlighten me on this I would appreciate it. Jeremy.

Jeremy,

As far as the benefits of removing the ring, there is none. Now to the subject of being able to hear the turbo whistle thats another thing. You can really hear the turbo spool up with the ring out.
The task is easy. . remove the intake hose from the front of the turbo. And then you will see inside a snap ring, just gentle remove the snap ring and the silencer ring can be removed at this point. (Its the chrome piece just behind the snap ring). Take care when removing the snap ring.

Killer, what I did on my 2500 was holesaw a 3½"hole into the left rear corner of the airbox and another into the firewall Pyscotty air location. Connected the two holes together with 3"RV holding tank dump hose. Works almost a good as a Pyscotty, but is 99% cheaper. You will get more turbo noise in the cab though. Some folks have cut holes in the factory air box to let in more air, this will work, but you will be drawing in hot under the hood air. Drawing the air from outside the engine compartment will lower your EGTs 100°-150°

Boy, I sure am glad I pulled off the inlet hose to the turbo in order to remove the silencer ring! What I found was terrible, dirt everywhere! On the turbo blades, in the hose and the airbox lid. It seems that I am another ex-K&N customer. I immediately went down to the place I bought my K&N and got my money back and put the stock paper filter on!!!!!! I had read about the stories but I just thought people were just trying to start $$it! Now I know the truth, K&N isn't what it's cracked up to be! So, somebdy tell me about putting in a new airbox and maybe a GOOD air filter.

I have never had this problem with a K&N. I have had at least 5 of them on different vehicles, including my Cummins.

I'm not saying K&N is useless, I'm sure it has it's applications. Just not on my Cummins! If you take my filter after 4000 miles you can see 10-20 small inch long slits in the cotton fibers where the fibers have seperated and is letting the dirt through. I thoroughly cleaned my intake hose and airbox before I put the K&N in and then today- Filthy! My lid seals good and I used the silicone around the seal. It (airbox and hose) was pretty clean before I started with the K&N, that is why I was pi$$ed! Maybe I'll give the amsoil a shot.

Killer59,
I have a paper setup that is fairly easy and to build (some welding), and the seal is very positive. I haven't run it very long yet though, so no guarantees. If you want details, then email me.

Killer,it seems that K&N has it's share of quality control problems, besides ones like yours that have openings many come from the factory over oiled. It's just something you have to check before installing. My K&Ns have been fine for over 100k. Best advice is check any filter you install for leaks with the looking at the sun method.

Unless you like noise leave it in,there is no benefit other than more noise by taking it out. I personally wish mine had a couple more silencer rings, the turbo whine irritates me on long drives.

OK, let me pose the question this way. How can I increase air flow with the stock airbox and a K&N? I've heard of removing a cone and putting holes int. What's with that?
