Ok,I've got one for ya... ... ..... my truck was born July '92, that makes it an early 92 model year/CPL is 1351 ,right?

Page #50, issue #40 states that "... ... further changes with the '92. 5 model year, turbocharger outlet was changed to a bigger 21cm. The CPL no. updated to 1579".

Upon removal of my turbo I found the number 21 cast into the side of the exhaust housing. This is the original turbo. In fact, the engine is virgin to any mods. Nothing had ever been changed including; lift pump, injectors, pump settings, turbo and valves never adjusted.

Has anyone run across this before,or am I missing something? Was there a program to replace 18. 5cm housings?

I may be mistaken, but I was under the impression that it was changed to the smaller size at the turning point. I thought the early first genners had the 21's and the newer first gen trucks had the 18's.

My 90 model (non-intercooled) came with the 18. 5cm housing, and the build date was in 1989, so I believe you are right in that the later trucks came with the larger housing.

I'm pretty sure it goes this way.

89-91 18. 5cm (non intercooled)

91. 5-92 21cm (added intercooler and changed exhaust housing to reduce emissions)

93 18. 5 (went back to 18. 5 exhaust housing because of customer complaints about power)

You will probably find some overlaps in parts depending on the build date and as changes were phased in. My 93 is one of the very last 1st Gens made (8/93) and has a 94 head on it. 94s hit the dealer lots in 9/93

Turbo's

Greenleaf, Hi! If you are going to change-out your turbo, go to a 16 sq. cm. housing. They are about $150. 00 and will give you quite a bit more performance. I have a 91 W-250 with a 21 sq. cm. housing and with a K&N filter and a Banks Exhaust I could only get 15 lbs. of boost. When I put the 16 sq. cm. housing on, I could bury the needle at 30 lbs. Really woke the truck up! Hope this helps. Joe Fihn (Buffalo) Pnx. , AZ.

If memory serves, this question was raised a number of months ago, with someone posting the same info that Jbolt did, and it was determined that this was correct. All the 92's had the stupid 21, which mine unfortunately does :{ I can't wait to get enough extra cash to get a 16 non-gated and the pyro that I so desperately need. Speaking of pyros, the guy I bought my truck from had a pyro, and he left the wiring and rather large-guage wire from the thermocouple to the guage in the truck, the only thing I can't figure out is where the thermocouple was drilled. The manifold isn't patched anywhere, I've looked all up and down the downpipe. All I can figure is that he replaced the downpipe instead of patching it when he pulled the thermocouple, but the pipe doesn't look all the new. I don't get it. Sorry for sort of thread-jacking here, but my brain is just in high gear and I'm connecting some strange thoughts
