Turbo size question

I am confused as to what size housings came originally on which model years. Can you folks who are "in the know" please give a chronological accounting?
And part 'B' is, which way do we want to go with them to 'bomb'? Larger housing? Smaller housing? for top end or bottom end?
How big is too big, and at what point do you need a bigger exhaust?

The answer is:

1. Big exhaust. How can you tell if your exhaust is too small? Leave your truck idle in a parking lot, no cars around & walk around to the side where your exhaust exits. Stand back 3 car lengths or so. Is the engine sound louder than the exhaust? OOPS, boring, must be stock exhaust, got to be louder/bigger. #ad

2. Turbo housing. Bigger handles more fuel @ lower EGT. Stock = Ford meat. Add fuel & a bigger housing. You want the wife to look over @ the work bench & say "What's that thing?" "Well dear, that's the new turbo. Bigger means better. Will make the truck run cooler while we're towing & run better. " Don't tell her you're cramming 2X the normal amount of fuel into the beast. #ad

Now I'm confused! I know the 1st generation rams had 21cm2 and 18. 5cm2 turbos (not sure which years) Mom's '96 Ford B-series has a 14cm2 (rams the same) I'm not sure if the 16cm2 came into play somewhere in one of those years? A friend of mine and I are considering 12cm2 housings for our 1st gen. 's (this is a good thing) I'm probably all wrong!
