I have been smelling burnt oil sometimes at stoplights. Crawled under and notices so oil leakage getting on the hot side. Looks to be coming from between the two housings at the intersection. Not an oil line leak. Do I need to do anything?

See signature for specs.

If oil is hitting the ground I would fix the leak. If it's just a wet spot I would leave it be for now. Often the hot oil smell is from the draft tube. How recent was your last oil change?

check the turbo for shaft play, i think you have a seal and bearing wear problem

I recently replaced the turbo gasket to the exhaust manifold. The shaft had zero end play. The upper oil feed line is clean as a whistle at the fitting. The drain tube at the turbo is wet but that isn't the cause as the black oil spot is up higher and it looks to be coming from the bearing area.

It's not alot... once in a while I get a whiff. Someone mentioned coking to me could be the cause and said I better get it serviced.

Oil changed every 7000. Truck has 146,000 on her. Turbo about 100,000

Sounds to me like your turbo is on its way out... At least the seal on the exhaust side is anyway.

How does the tailpipe look? Is the soot dry and powdery or wet and sticky? Any difference in smoke color or smell (especially when cold)? Turbos are a Craps shoot when you think about it. Some will last forever, while others won't make it to the first oil change.

Tail pipe look same, smokes same. I think it's time to have the bearings serviced.

Its time for a rebuilt turbo. Be sure they balance it. Depending on usage, you may be stretching the oil change intervals a bit too much. Also, change the oil when you change the turbo.

I had a intermittent smell in my truck the other day. One day after an oil change. I had just driven by a restaurant and I thought it may be them burning steaks on the grill or something like that. After 50 miles or so it faded away..??????????
145k, turbo original, no apparent leaking.

Thinking about doing the rebuild myself. Watched a few rebuild videos on youtube. No problem with the mechanical part. I just wonder about the balance. Some say if the turbo has no damage and just needs seals and bearings, simply marking everything will get you back.

Rebuild kit $105
Rebuild by local shop $550
Rebuild by High Tech $400 plus shipping.
