Hey fellow oil burners,

I have a 2002 2500 4x4 with the automatic transmission and the HY35 turbo (?)... was wondering if I could upgrade to the turbo used by the '01-02 HO engines... ... I beleive that is a HX35 or 40 unit.

Is this possible? I could go aftermarket with a BD Borg Warner unit or something else but thought it might be cheaper to go with a unit out of a wrecked 2500 HO vintage 02 model at the local yard. :--)

I have the Banks Power Pak installed in the truck right now and have upgraded my torque converter...

Can any of you enlighten this unenlightened fellow oil burnin', smoke sniffin member?? :D

The HX35 is what is used in the 01 - 02 Ho cummins engines.

It will work fine in your truck as long as you use the Compressor housing and outlet pipe from the HX35 as well. Your HY35 compressor and outlet pipe will not work with hx35 turbo.

Hy-35 to Hx-35

I too am considering doing the exact same thing with the exact same truck for the exact same reason. I understand that the Hx-35 is available with different size exhaust housings and was also wondering how much turbo lag will be involved with the Hx-35 and an auto trans. I have the ATS transmission and the triple lock torque converter decreases the stall speed by about 400-500 rpm so there is not a lot of "slippage" like there was with the stock auto. It seems like the Hy-35 spools awfully quickly though.

Keep me posted as to how your swap works... I had a source for a local wrecked '01 HO and went to look at the turbo last night..... in the wreck, the truck rolled onto the passenger side and damaged ( read bentback from the exhaust manifold ) the turbo . There were cracks on the manifold and the turbo housing was most likely stressed. I did not see any signs of fractures in the housing casting but was afraid to touch the unit!

So I am off looking for other sources... ... I guess I need to save just a few more bucks and pick up a Borg Warner S300 and do the swap! Or find an HX35... ...

Since I have the Banks Monster Exhaust and the Power Elbow, swapping out should be no chore as far as the exhaust connections go. I would like to swap out the exhaust manifold with a BD pulse manifold... . might as well while I am in there, right?!?!

Stay tuned for more... ...

Can you guys swapping turbos enlighten me as to the removal procedure? I bought a new exhause manifold and got as far as unhooking the intercooler pipe, the oil drain tube, and the oil feed line from the top. When I got to the bolts holding the turbo to the manifold I realized they were "studs" and I didn't see how I was going to remove all four to get the turbo off. I know this is a newbie question, but can someone fill me in?

Thanks,

John
