First off, many thanks to all who offered advice on my transmission and turbo change. Now on to my questions. First off, which turbo came factory on an 06, and which on an 04? My Father would like to know if it would be a good idea to run my 06 turbo on his 04 and what would be needed to make it work?

the early 04 had he341 the late 04 through 07. 4 has he351ce. it is a very good upgrade. the he351 has a solenoid activated boost elbow (for lack of better term ) on it. there is two ways to handle this the first is to hook the solenoid up to a ignition hot and ground. the second way is to mod the solenoid to fixed. you can do this with a dremmel in about a half hour. pm me with your email address if you decide th mod and i will send instructions

The other option is to plug the solenoid hole. ATS, among others, sell this plug. If you run enough fueling to exceed 35psi of boost you need to have the WG operational and tapping the plug is the most effective way to add a adj boost elbow.

he will brake the shaft go bigger, dont waste money on those... i know turbos are expensive but as with tools of you buy the cheap stuff you will

get in a bad circle

Just leave the solenoid on there and cut the wires. Add a boost elbow to the boost reference line to the WG actuator and set for what your max boost to be. I set it for 40 psi at WOT and that will give the best spool and air available from the HE351.

The HE351 is pretty tough, I have been running with no WG for almost 2 years at frequently hit 40 psi or better with no issues. Stock fueling on an 04 will probably not stress the turbo even with the WG disabled.

I have yet to hear of this issue on a HE351.

the he351ce is off of it's curve above 32psi it is a good upgrade for those that are looking for a small amount of power increase, good spool up and good low rpm torque. for the power people just go twins

the he351ce is off of it's curve above 32psi

Only under the narrowest of scrutiny is that true. A turbo map shows theoretical optimal ranges but the realistic curve extends beyond that before it becomes a concern. One can run all the numbers one wants but in actual operation it doesn't get far enough out of its range till you break 40 psi. Up to that it is quite capable of providing enough decent air to support some pretty good power.

Thanks for all the info guys. Dad is wanting to tie the wires in but we aren't quite sure how to tell which is the hot and which is the ground.

You can't, there is no circuit on an 04, not 04. 5, to tie the controller into. Its a 5 volt PWM circuit that is controlled by the ECU. If you wire power to it the WG will never open, if you leave it uplugged the WG will open at 26 psi. If you run too much voltage it will burn out and go to 26 psi max.

Like I said, leave it uplugged and tie the wires out of the way. Get a $20 boost elbow to put in the reference line and use that to set the max boost.

Where can he source the boost elbow? We have both been cummins owners since 90 but this is our first time diving into serious upgrades other than exhaust and programmers.

the solenoid is 12 volts it does not make any difference about polarity. tie it into any ignition hot wire. you can run the he351 above 32 psi but the drive pressure is through the roof. we have charted it. we tow heavy and want sustained power with good mpg. if you play you can get by with 40 psi for short durations

You can find them here boost elbow items - Get great deals on eBay Motors, cummins elbow items on eBay.com!

12 volt will mean no WG and will eventually burn out due to it is speced as a 5 volt PWM signal. He doesn't have a hot wire there and no reason run one that is a potential problem.

The HE351 will do well up to 35-37 psi if the fueling is not too heavy, stock to light programmer. Beyond that DP gets high when the 3rd event activates in high rpm's but not enough to negate the extra air. It is still providing good air at 40 psi to cool EGT's.

Price to pay for a quick spooling turbo that will flow decent air and is cheap to obtain.
