Getting a New Front Bumper Built

I have a '93 with a Banks (14cm) and installed the thermo coupling before the turbo, pulling, #7400 ,6% grade temp approx. 1150-1200 deg. What is max prior to turbo that won't create a meltdown ????

At 1200 degrees you are just about there. I would stop there and keep a little margine of safety. Have you done any pump timing increases? Has the exhaust been opened up? At the weight you are talking about, mine gets to about 950 degrees after the turbo which would be about 1100 degrees pre turbo. I have a 16 housing, yours will run a little higher with the 14.

BTW - need to move this to the first gen forum.

Stan,

I seem to remember that sometime ago Piers noted in one of the threads that the difference between pre & post turbo is around 250 degrees plus X number of degrees for each additional pound of boost over X lbs, but then my memory isn't the best. Maybe someone else can jump in and help out. On my truck the readings are pre-turbo and I try to limit the max temp at 1250.

Just my $. 02.

Al, That sounds about right. That would mean that my 950 degrees post-turbo reading would be around 1200 or so pre-turbo. This means I was close to getting in trouble a few years back before I did some of the mods. I was pulling the travel trailer up a long pull close to Yakima WA and got the turbo up to about 1100 degrees. Now, add 250 degrees to that and it was getting close!!

Stan

The Banks literature that came with the stuff I put on my '91 stated that 1300 was their recommended cutoff point with the thermocouple installed as you have yours - pulling weight nearly identical to yours up the same grades full-bore at 65 mph would usually display 1200 degrees...

Hey Gary! Just can't stay away from the first gen section, can ya!:D

Hows the new truck doing? Made any "adjustments" yet? How does it tow compared to the old truck?

Stan

Shucks Stan - put in a lot 'o years in that old truck - might as well share what little I Learned in the process to some of the new guys... ;) :D

New truck looks/drives/pulls great - nearly as much power as the '91... :D :D

I just sent off for one of the "magic boxes", and will soon have more than enough grunt to satisfy me - and keep the Ford and GM guys frustrated in the hills. . :D

I found (from personal experience) that about 10*F for every 1 pound of boost is pretty close BUT... . as you go over about 20psi the "additional *F increase too) so, at about 25psi the formula of 10*F/1psi boost was out by about 50-75*F

That was at WOT/OD/empty/uphill.

Just a thought... I hated (got tired) of "doing math" when reading my gauges.

Bob.

My EGT gauge is pre-turbo and has never gone above 1200. This was when pulling a long hill with my trailer at about 60mph and then only for about 30 seconds. Cabbage Hill outside of Pendelton will generate 950-1000 near the top.

Happy trails

Bob :)

Thats one looong pull up that hill Bob. Another one is at Ashland. Mine with after turbo usually peaks at about 950.

which would put me around 1200 pre turbo.
