we just cut and slid the cam plate on my budies 95 ctd and in three days the turbo gave up. had 230,000 miles on it. my buddy just replaced the turbo with a piers 35 used bought off this site from a member, the guy said that it was a 40 center machined for 35 parts with a 14 cm ex housing and a banks 4" elbow. he installed his stock elbow and exhaust when he put in the turbo.

Now the problem:

egt's have sky rocketed says 800 at cruise down the highway. no problem to spike over 1100 (after turbo).

boost has dropped even though waste gate is set (supposedly) at 40psi.

and i mean from 34 lbs of boost to no more than 27 lbs of boost.

says that the truck is slower than it was and thinks it has a boost leak at the turbo that he can not find.

Any assistance would be great, the previous owner sold the turbo because he said it didn't work for his application on a farm at low speeds, my buddies truck is a auto and it doesn't seem to work at high speeds either. Help!

thanks

Are you getting any smoke?

A larger turbo generally will hurt the low end power. But it should help upper end if you have enough fuel.

Try pinching the small boost hose at the turbo ( use a small clamping pliers ) and go for a drive. This will take the wastegate out of the picture for a test drive. Now what happened. ?

If you have a leak on the boost side, it usually is noisey.

The HX40 that you have (some times called a Dodgezilla Hybrid) will provide higher crusing EGTs but lower overall EGTs when you get on it. If you are running stock injectors, that turbo will be a little laggey, if you put in larger injectors (try a set of 370s) that turbo will come alive. Also, with stock injectors, because of the larger housing (14cm2 vs 12cm2), you are not delivering enough fuel to the engine to take full advantage of the turbo.

I doubt there is anything wrong with that turbo, it just needs more fuel.

lots of rich black smoke, smoke rollin out the tail pipe and still low boost.

its hotter on the bottom, we expected a little lag, but it never comes on.

the waste gate is not boost driven per say. I have not seen the turbo but apparently it has some sort of spring, came with extras. we were told it had a 40 lbs of boost spring in it.

I think without looking at it that he has a boost leak. he is going to start working when he gets off work.

an idea dropped in my ear by the local diesel instructor at the comunity collegeis weather it is a pulse turbo and has the divider in it or not. my buddy said it did but here again I have not seen it.

thanks for the ideas keep em comin, I post what he finds later tonight.

You say it comes with a spring? Is this an external spring? If so, is it pulling the wrong way? I, somehow, know this will make them smoke and be lazy!!

Did you pinch the hose I mentioned?
