My truck has the stock turbo that was on it when it left the showroom floor. I want to upgrade for more power and get rid of the worn our turbo. Can I rebuild the turbo i have and get more out of it or should I upgrade to a bigger turbo? If so what size turbo?

First question is truck innercooled or none IC on my crewcab I used a HX35 with a 16 housing along with a fuel pin and 3200 gov spring and also fuel screw turned in some along with star wheel and truck came alive after doing that so far . I also have a Built Trans with TCS converter that add's too the Mix of thing's that help's .

The truck has an oil cooled turbo but I've been told that converting to inter cooled is better. At this point money is in my hand but I don't want to spend a butt load of money.

Well we All have Oil cooled turbo's what yr truck is your's 91. 5 to 93 they started the Innercooled truck's anything before that was None Inner cooled .

If you have an intercooled truck the turbo outlet will go into a tube that goes in front of the radiator to a cooler, if its a non intercooled truck the turbo outlet goes overtop the valve covers and right into the intake.

I am currently running a PDRHX35, that along with my other mods - listed in my - sig provides me with very good performance. I also see 19. 5 to 21. 5 MPG on a daily basis as long as I keep my right foot under control.

An HE351 off of an 04. 5+ truck makes a good upgrade. You can usually find them on Ebay and sometimes they are reasonable. An HE341 would work also if you don't want to push a lot of fuel. With a little work the HE351VE will work nicely also. An HX35 with an upgraded comp wheel works quite nicely also. You can look around for used or buy new if want to spend the bucks.

My PDRHX35 is hybred HX35 bought from Piers Diesel Research at least 10 years ago. I also had the 14 CM waste gated hot side from a Banks kit I bought in 1994 that I've set to open at about 34 PSI and it has performed quite well over the years. The numbers in my sig were set with the PDRHX35 and Snow W/M.

With just mild fuel, the HX35W turbos off the 215HP trucks makes a good turbo upgrade, IMO. I find them pretty cheap from time to time, and they work well, last a long time, and give good response.....

If you have a non-intercooled truck, I'd suggest upgrading your exhaust housing... . otherwise, you need to find an intercooler and upgrade to that type of system. It lowers the intake air temps drastically, which are out of control when you start upping the fuel on a non-intercooled engine... .

I agree I, if truck is intercooled a hx35 if not easiest thing is to find a tighter exhaust housing. but I am running a he351 and they're awesome but be prepared for downtime and fabbing.

I've run a PDRHX35, which is a hybrid for years, and I am very happy with its performance. I check the intake wheel at every oil change and it is still the same as when it was new. I've noticed a drop in boost since I improved my trucks breathing but I expected that. It still performs well through out the trucks power range. I would recomend the HX35 - it is durable and performs very quite well.

Diesel Power mags November issue has a comparison of 6 turbos, Holset HE351CW, Auroa 3000, Killer B, Holset Cheetah, Silver Bullet 62 and E. D. 63mm billet S300 that you might want to look at. To me prices are high and performance varies but their analysis is very thorough.

Since your truck is not intercooled, you have what we call a "baby" H1C with a very small compressor wheel. An H1C or WH1C from an intercooled truck from mid year 91 thru 1996 or so (cheap on ebay) will be a great upgrade, but you'll need to change that tiny crossover pipe from the turbo to the intake manifold. I found an 3 inch intake horn from a Freighliner 6BT that fit and had a crossover pipe welded to fit. There are other options as well that will work for low cost.
