turbo upgrade

can anyone tell me if the stock turbo off my 97 would be a direct bolt on onto a first gen truck. would it be an upgrade worth doing? TIA

Upgrade worth doing yes. Direct swap... ... not sure. It's will bolt to the manifold but I suspect the oil drain and downpipe may need to be modified.

The oil drain tube and the down pipe will bolt directly as long as the turbo has the cast elbow taken off so theres a flat 3in flange. I had one on my 93 off a 97 and it really woke it up and sounded cool to.

The exhaust housing is longer. It will not bolt up unless you do something about the down pipe OR remove the 12cm gated housing from the HX-35 and install a non gated exhaust housing. Then stuff will bolt on.



Be aware that if the first gen turbo doesn't have the oil feed adapter bushing, you'll need one.



The OEM size for the 97 compressor wheel "should" be 56mm. The OEM size for the first gen "should" be either 50 or 54 depending upon the year.

he was asking 200. 00 with heat shield i do think he sold

the heat shield (not that taht is a big deal) but neither one

of us know if that is a fair price good deal for me and fare

price to him!

I believe that in this case you can "tease" the exhuast system back enough to make it fit. In my case I was able to use a non-gated 14cm housing on my truck and all I had to do was loosen off the downpipe clamps and one exhaust hanger clamp then with some 'encouragement' it moved enough to install the longer outlet on the 14cm to mate up just fine... . I don't know if this is the case with all exhuast systems but it's worth a try... cause it's free !!!!...

Personally I think $200 for a turbo with 175K on it is too much. $100 to "maybe" $150 tops.

That's what I was thinking, $100 tops for that high of mileage. I'm cheap though, so I'd only give $50.

I'm to lazy to go back and re-read each post. I do not know if the first gen is pre innercooled. However, if it is, the bearing oil feed line will not thread into/onto the updated turbo bearing/center section. Thus, you need the adapter.
