Okay folks it's almost time for the trusty (up to 34# every day) HX-35 to be replaced.

Is a tuned 40 (Pius or Piers) enough? I'm going to fuel with at least DD3's.

[return from interruption]

Back when I was planning my power upgrades, I searched and read and discussed and studied on it until I settled on the Comp/dd3/hx40 combination. I have the UFM(Comp) and am pretty close to buying injectors and now wonder about going just a bit more fuelish.

So how much fuel will a 40 support? What's the next step in turbos. How much fuel does it take to spool the larger turbos? Don't want multiple turbos. Big Joe does fine with a single.

And of course now I have the EDM/ Extrude Hone debate. Hearing some really good stuff on the EDM side, but know the EH's as tried and true.

And of course what I dig up on the used market sometimes fouls the whole play up.

Daily driver with heavy loads once in a while.

I have a PDR 40 with DD3's and Drag Comp... it works well. There is more lag than the 35 but once it hits, hang on. EGT wise I can still get into the hot zone on levels 4 and 5 but heck I am going plenty fast.

If you are going to tow with it, you are going to have to leave the DDUFM on the lower levels and keep your eyes on the gauges.

towing

When I'm pulling the allmighty lawnmower, no concerns--BUT I'm putting in the Con OFE small version instead of doing the flywheel upgrade for the larger clutch. SO I'll be putting the box on 1x1 or OFF to pull the heavy loads--which are infrequent. Heck I don't even have a brake controller on it yet.

34#?

Is 34 psi all the HX-35's are suppose to reach max? Gosh I hope not I can nail down in 5th or 6th and get 40psi max out of it. I know I need an upgrade for my setup but need more $$$ before I can do that along with a clutch. With my set up I feel the HX-40 should work well. See sig for set up. I am planning on a 40 and a 13-1. 25 Con FE clutch as I have future plans for this truck that involve some serious showerheads. :D Kept the stock ones for that reason alone. :D Are there any other turbo's out there in the same class as the 40's that are dead reliable and not outrageously priced? sorry I got long winded Dan.

My experince

See sig for mods, I drive my truck every day to and from work and tow, the 40 spools O k with out the box on at all and that is how I drive most of the time unless I feel like playing on 5x5 but I still can get and maintain very high temps if not watching what I am doing. The egt seams to jump higher if babying it but get to a point and slows down drasticly. So far I can't see going back to a 35 stock or Piersified only going farther ahead. I would guess that a PDR hx-40 would very safely support stage 1 or 2 injectors or bigger with watching the gauge close. Just a guess

Oh no, mine was getting 43# when I first added the box. Then I got to studying and found out that HX35's can pop at that level--AND even if it doesn't pop it's "outside the map". It is putting more heat into the air it is compressing than the intercooler can take out. That means you lose charge density which is not effecient... And we're all here to be effecient aren't we?

So I worked on it to get the boost down.

The HX40 DDIII's and theUFM were a great combination for me

I had that combination dynoed many times and I consistantley got between 450 to 480rwhp with that combination I was able to run between 13. 3 to 13. 5sec in the 1\4m. My good 60ft times were usually 1. 8sec. I often saw 46 to 48lbs of boost in a 1\4mile run. By the way I have that HX40 for sale w\4in down pipe. I recently up graded to twins. It has low miles less than 10,000. Merv

I'll have to wait on the B1 or 50/55. That'll be for when I decide to go BEYOND the 500hp barrier. Hmmmm, and a ported head, ATS manifold, enhanced VP44, camshaft. Yeah, that artta kick it on up there.

Just won't be pushing enough fuel to spool a biggun-this time

Thanks for the replies. I'd been "out of the loop" for a few months and didn't know what new developments might have come along. Still looks like a tuned 40 is the way to go for the 400-500hp daily driver.

You are right about HX40 for a daily driver

If you ran the HX40 against some of the bigger turbo's, in a 1\4 mile run, you'd be spooled up and gone by the time a bigger turbo started spooling. As a daily driver in stop and go traffic, the bigger turbo would be darn right sluggish and cause lots of smoke while it was spooling. The HX40 can be a little sluggish in stop and go situations. I know the bigger turbos would worse. Merv

Looks like an interesting prospect

What are some of the numbers for this setup,e. g. 60ft times and some of the 1\4 mile times and E. G. T's be interested to see what the numbers are. Merv
