I installed an AFE Pro Guard 7 intake on my truck and it sounds like I have a Hairdryer on steriods under the dash. Will the silencer ring quiet the turbo down, or should i just turn the radio up? the whine isnt that bad on the highway, but it is crazy loud at WOT- What do you guys think?

Ah, you'll get used to it. If you want put the silencer back in, it takes some of the whine out. Experiment with it, as only you have to listen to it.

Turn stereo down and roll your windows down as well when you are climbing hills with a load. I have the fortune of having a tunnel at the top of one of the hills we have to ascend when pulling our trailer. My wife and I just look at each other and without a word roll the windows down as we enter the tunnel. Ahhh,,,, sweet sound. It`s not for everyone of course.

not BHAF

Whoa. For a moment there, I thought you were talking about a BHAF, but I see you are actually talking about an AFE. Much different animal.

I'm about to install a BHAF - Fleetguard AH-19037, precisely because I want to minimize turbo whine and keep my TAG.

As much as I like the sound, in my case, turbo whine causes passenger whine, and my ears can't take that!

I just put an AFE Pro Guard 7 intake system on my 02. I put the silencer ring back in just prior. I'm glad I did. Still sounds good with the ring back in.

AFE ProGuard 7

Yeeha.....

Mine comes tomorrow! No silencer ring & just installed Rips 4" exhaust. Can hardly stand it... . WAITING! WAITING! WAITING!... ... ... .

Rips 4" with massive turbo whine! Awesome! To each his own... . :D :D

i've got a question for you guys using an afe stage II with the PG7. how does the tube fit? interference with the alternator? how does the top of the filter box fit? can you attach all four screws?

btw, love the turbo whistle with the PG7... nothing "whining" about our trucks, i think.

My tube butts up against the alternator wiring harness, as seen here;

As far as the top fitting, all 4 screws went in no problem.

I don't have the pg7 though.

Is the silencer ring in the OEM air filter box? I just put the AFE on yesterday and love it - now I can finally hear the turbo spoll up! One thing, though, if I spoll the turbo up, and then left of the accelerator suddenly, I get a big sucking noise - is this normal? Everything is tight from the install. Never noticed it before the install.

skargo thanks for the pic. my tube is about that. i've been thinking of taking it to a belt or disk sander and taking about a half inch off at the turbo end. not sure what it will do to the filter end, but i think i'll be ok.

HOWEVER, i think i need to send the top back because there is just no way all four will go in. just got afe's phone number so i will give 'em a call i guess.

UPDATE while i was writing this i called afe expecting to leave a message. a wonderful young lady answered the phone and i told her what was wrong. she said that there wa a problem with a couple of them and said she would ship one out right away and provide paid shipping of the original top. top marks for customer service to afe!!!!

i told her that if they trimmed 0. 5 inch off the first horizontal run from the turbo it would be much better, but she was unimpressed with my engineering. (totally tongue in cheek here, she was VERY nice and helpful).

so a warning to you future purchasers check the fit... it should be good. and they are selling plenty apparently... .

Yahoo! Received my Pro Guard 7 today from Rip (Great Guy) & I LOVE IT! Nothin but Turbo & and awesome sounding exhaust! First Class Package!!

Clay :D :D

BHAF whine

Definately put the silencer back in and you might also consider a Turbo Air Guide (TAG). By smoothing out the air flow into the turbo the sound is also reduced.

Just for kicks, I put my silencer back in and took it for a drive. I could'nt even hear the turbo. I had to listen really close to hear it under throttle. I can't imagine if the TAG makes it even more quite, probably sound like a gasser.

Needless to say, silencer ring is back OUT. I love hearing that thing spool up.

hmmm... . curious.

the only place i've really noticed the a noise difference in the PG7 is the engine compartment with the hood up standing next to the stage II box with the top off. i have to turn the radio down to notice the trubo spool up and will probably lose that sound when i install the magnaflow 4" exhaust.

You will find that you hear the turbo quite well through the Magnaflow. Sounds really good!:D
