This may be a dumb question but what causes the turbo whistle at idle? I have heard a few trucks that have a more pronounced sound and wondered how to get it on mine. bigger turbo? bigger exhaust? Thanks for your help

Well, probably the quickest thing you can do is to remove the silencer ring in your turbo. After that, either replace the stock muffler with a piece of straight pipe, or a straight-through design muffler.

An open style air filter like an AFE or a BHAF would help too--probably even more than replacing the stock muffler

thanks everyone for your input. I am planning different exhaust and the silencer ring is removed. Is the amsoil airfilter enough? It seemed to perform better than a k&n so I went with it. Thanks again!

K&N or Amsoil air filter (stock paper filter muffles the turbo at the airbox end) will do fine. Removing the silencer ring will make the turbo sing when you're driving it, but not at idle.

To get the sound you want at idle, either remove the stock muffler and straight-pipe it (leave the small "resonator" installed or you'll be sorry; the drone is awful) or go with an aftermarket exhaust system. The cheapest way is straightpiping, and unless you're making over 375HP (so I've read on here anyway) the stock system is fine.

Stand by the tailpipe of a straightpiped Ram and you'll be all :D

Is there a difference between the turbos on a automatic vs. manual? I think mine is the hy-35 but not sure. Mine is 02 auto. Is there a favorite in exhaust brands?

Thanks

Brandon

Noticed the turbo whine post. I have had something in my 02 making more what I would call a whine than a whistle for quite a long time. Today I pulled the belt off thinking it might be a pulley or bad bearing but it did not appear to be. Still made the noise with no belt. Found a very deep cut in the belt and am going to the dealer tomorrow to get the belt replaced and see if they can find anything that might have done it. Now if I could only get rid of the whine!! Maybe it is the turbo whistle that sounds like a whine to me?? Dean

Dean,

I have a whine on my '02, but only when it's cold and it comes from the power steering pump. No whine on the turbo though. Good luck!
