Will a holset 40 work on these 6.7s reason being I had one given to me , should I keep for spare of VGT goes south?

No, an HX40 won't work. (Given you want to keep all the controls and functionality in place)

An HE451VE would with some mods to the DP, thats the current evolution of an HX40.

Thanks Cerb, so what I gathered from reply was it would if I didn't care about exhaust brake, not that that is what I'd like to do but in a pinch down the road till I saved up 2k for VGT it would get me by for a bit.

There are so many differences and the fact the truck would not like the VGT controller gone it is not worth a temp install. The turbo would have to be reclocked and the DP changed and with extra fueling it will not perform like the original. Not really worth the effort to swap it in.
