this question is for a friend. he is having a problem with his turbo. the turbo is stock. the problem he is having is it wont start spooling till about 2600 rpm. he said it doesn't have any shaft play and it spins freely by hand. would the resonator or cat have anything to do with this? thanks in advance for your help. richard

Could be a hung open wastegate , possible boost leak (I. E Hose disconnected or leaking intercooler) Clogged air filter , or even the truck is in limp mode from another issue. Issues like a failed map sensor (Won't increase fuel delevery without any idea how much intake pressure is present) However anything electrical should throw a Check Engine Light.

So he has to wail it up to 2600 before boost comes in? is this during normal driving conditions? From a stop what exactly is he experiencing? What year truck ? Is it equiped with an exhaust brake?

the truck is a 2001. he does not have any codes coming up and it does not have an exhaust brake. he said his truck is smoking like freight train. it happened to him getting on the highway. he said he ran the truck up hard to 2800 and the turbo started to spool at about 2600. after he got the turbo to spool it would work fine. after about 5min or so it started to act up again so he repeated what he did with the same out come. he is in pennsylvania right now and his friend there told him his turbo is going bad. that is when he looked at the turbo and it didn't have any shaft play (in and out) and it spins freely by hand.

Being intermittent and smoking when not spooling, I'd say the wastegate is sticking. If he's got a stick, put a pair of vicegrips on the wastegate line. If it is an auto, then a spent 22 cal cartidge in the wastegate line will block it. He may set an overboost code, but that's better than loosing all the boost all the time.

If the wastegate is sticking open then the visegrips will not work because that just shuts the air off that opens the wastegate. Somehow he needs to shut the wastegate with the rod at the bottom of the charger

Assuming this is a 24v:

Bad MAP? If the ECM doesn't "see" boost it won't feed fuel. No fuel = no spool. And it may not necessarily set a code.
