Anyone else ever notice some black soot on the compressor impeller? I took off the hose going from the air filter box to the turbo and noticed some black soot on the fan blades.

I noticed some on mine wen I did my last oil change. I figured it might have been from the oil in my K&N. Has anyone else had this experience?

Well Im a little glad to hear its not only me BUT. . I just got off the phone with Holeset and they assured me that the impeller should be clean, clean, clean. He said there was no way that any residue should be on that intake impeller unless we are experiencing some "blowback". It should be clean air only going through there. I also called a shop who services Holeset's up in Albany and the fellow there said the same thing. I am gonna replace the air filter and clean off the impeller (at the recommendation of the man at Holeset) and keep my eye on it.

How did he recommend that you clean it?

When I change my oil I check this and have found very sligh amount of dirt on the leading edges of the compressor blades. My filter is in good condition and I noticed the same thing with the stock filter and a K&N replacement.

I have been wiping with a clean lint free rag and after starting spraying distilled water into compressor with engine idling. Does not come spotlessly clean, but always better. I am having difficulty with the blowby or leak theory. No conection with the crankcase and no way for the exhaust side of the tubo to leak into the compressor side without alot of oil coming with it. Or, am I missing something here?

He recommended a piece of emory cloth to clean it. Its a bit easier to clean now that the stupid Silencing Ring is gone. He insisted that the compressor side of the turbo should have no dirt on the impeller. Ill clean mine up and keep my eye on it. Waiting for my new AF from Geno's. Will be here tomorrow so Ill put it in, clean compressor impeller and check it in about 1000 miles.

I don't think I would want to use emory cloth to clean the compressor wheel. I wouldn't want the dirt or debris to fall down into the housing, just to be blown around. When I cleaned mine I used a cleaner on a clean cloth to gently wipe the fins. By keeping the rag damp with the cleaner, I tried to collect the dirt rather than let it fall in. Just my . 02 cents. :D

Emory cloth!!? Why, wouldnt that be like putting small silica particles into the intake system and honing cylinder walls while you drive? I am still having a difficult time with this. Or is it me?

I am gonna use some cleaner on a damp rag. Just restating what the fellow said. I really thjink he meant emory cloth if the turbocharger was removed from the truck. I didnt tell him if it was in or out, just that it was dirty.
