Turbo Whine

P 7100 on Navistar DT 466?

My grandpa has a 1985 gmc suburban with a 6. 2 diesel that has 200,000 miles on it he refuses to get ride of it he has had it since new we have been thinking about putting a turbo on to help out in the power department anyne try this yet, does someone make a kit for this.

Any help would be great.

I have a friend that has one that he has put a turbo on, he rebuilt the engine for the turbo, before the rebuild and turbo it could hardly get out of it's own way, now it will pull a 7% 8 mile long grade at 75mph not bad for a 6. 2L and still gets 18 mpg. I think that Banks still makes a kit for the 6. 2L some where around $2000 I think, I would rebuild the engine if I were going to do it, if you don't you could lose the engine do to the turbo pressure.

Banks and ATS both make them. If you don't rebuild the engine, I would change the timing chain to a gear driven setup at least.

Would suggest new head gaskets/bolts too.

I had a 6. 2 with a Banks Sidewinder Turbo kit on it - It would get out of its own way... Pulled decently too. Very nice and complete kit.

If you do install a turbo. I would not push to much boost on it.

A local company had some 1 tons with Banks kits on them. Around the time your Sub was new. All of the trucks broke the cranks around 90k miles. This fleet had around 30 trucks if I remember right. They were used in a air freight/overnight app.

Going by GM part numbers the crank was not changed till the one piece rear seal came out.

If you really want to make that 6. 2 get with the program. Take it out, rebuild it. Drop the compression ratio from 22. 5:1 to 17:1.

You can then use a real turbo and waste gate. You might try and find some bigger rods to hold the load. Put an electric fuel pump on it. You most likely have wear now on the cam lobe that pushes the fuel pump rod and your not getting the best fuel pressure. Get some one to dial the pump up just a little bit. Drill out the fuel return check valve with a 1/4" drill. Buy a new one and keep it with you. If you want to check out the pump, remove the check valve and hold it up to a real bright light. If you see black specs or long black streaks, its starting to come apart. That trash will stop the check valve up eventually and shut the engine down. The drilled out check valve will solve that issue. The engine will shut down if the fuel return line is restricted.

That bugger will run.

We're rebuilding one now at the shop that was in a 82 Chevy 1/2 ton. 300k. We had a bad piston slap. Torn it down and found one piston with the skirt cracked, some in the pan, and the top of the piston cracked. It had been knocking for a while. Sounded like a push rod or lifter collapsed.

They don't have much hp in the stock form, but they will run forever. Good mileage truck with a 3:55 and auto transmission.
