Hey guys, the old W 250 is completely stock and has 178,000 miles on it. I was wondering about changing out the turbine housing to a 16 cm but am worried about turbo being wore out, housing not coming off, or damage due to loose shaft due to wear over time. My questions to you fellows are: What are the specifications on our turbo? Is it really a hard swap? Has any catastrophic failure ever occured due to installing a smaller housing on a wore out turbo? What is the best brand of housing to get?

I was thinking of just getting another turbo with the upgraded features, not necessarily like an HX 40, but something that will all but eliminate turbo lag and get me to 230 to 250 horsepower. I have the Getrag and stock clutch so I don't want too much power. I would also like to use the 3" exhaust. What are my options? Thank you very much for the help.

I think that on my pick-up I will go with the Piers Diesel Research HX-35. I talked to Kwikkurt and Piers, and it seems that if you aren't interested in making over 350 HP then the HX-35 is the way to go. I am doing this mod because of the mileage of my truck, the fact that I want to keep it, and because of what I want to do with it. Piers thought that his turbo with 16cm^2 housing would be great, and I can't wait,... . just need $$$

If you only want 230 to the wheels then cut and paste my signature. I put out 229. 6 on a dyno and 260 at the 1/4 mile track with speed and weight. I have 126,000 miles and the stock clutch. I just changed to the 12 cm2 housing but haven't done any runs. The dyno run showed me 3 psi less than the street. I have no EGT troubles towing a car trailer with my foot on the floor going up a hill. My turbo is stock also. I would go with the Piers setup but I don't have the $$ right now. I'm not sure of the benefit of the HX-40 if they can't put out the same boost numbers of the HX-35. EGT's maybe?

Aren't the HX 35's what are on the 2 nd generation trucks? If I get one with a 16 cm turbine housing I wouldn't have to fool with the exhaust would I? I don't think the 16's are wastegated on these turbo's, aren't both housings the same on our trucks and 2 nd generations? Like a 16 cm from our truck would fit on a 2 nd generation truck. Would I need a lot of fueling mods?

Come on guys, I need more input for a great power gain:D

The exhaust mods are only to reduce EGT's no real horsepower there other than they allow you to use more fuel. The 16 cm2 is not a wastegated housing and the housings for all Dodge Cummins trucks are interchangeable. You could tweak your pump but you may not see much gains due to your stock injectors. Injectors will make the difference.

The HX-35 is different then our WH-1 and the HX-35 that Piers sells is different then the one that is on the other trucks I think... I think that Piers has modified the one he sells, but I would have to check our you might inquire as well :D

Well guys:

There has to be more turbo options. As for Mr. Miller's post, I'm inquiring Russell:D That sounds like one sweet set up. I'm almost hooked, trying to view every possible option. I think that turbo would take care of my no boost problems. Piers said I could get a 14 cm or a 16 cm turbine housing and both were non wastegated. Might make a good proposal for a Christmas gift, or at least some cash to purchase one ;)

What is the difference between the wastegated and non-wastegated turbo's? Which is better? If we have non-wastegated ones we won't have to touch our exhausts when switching, correct?

The reason you would have to change the exhaust would be for the extra room from the wastegate. Piers has a non-wastegated 14 cm2?
