My 1997 2500 4x4 has the Cal. engine(egr valve, emissions system, etc. ). Can this be changed into a regular engine by taking anything off or switching anything and would it make an improvement in performance?I love the truck now so any improvement can only make it better, right?I'm new to the cummins game(came over from 5. 7 chevy gas), so PLEASE make your reply's in newcomer terms. Thanks alot.

Yes, it can be done!!! I ordered the Federal computer from DC (thank goodness parts dept. gave me dealer cost) and removed my EGR with no troubles. Installed Banks TwinRam Intake without EGR option. Blanked exh EGR connection with a plate. Removed catalytic converter, left Banks Muffler in. Very Happy with results. Any questions, just ask. C-Ya.

So far on my California '96, I installed one of the "ported" stock intake pieces from Collins Diesel in Stockton (bad idea actually, shoulda just bought a non-CA piece of a lot less money), and blocked off the EGR.

When I get around to it, I'll remove the EGR tube itself, and block off the EGR at the manifold.

i also have a 97 4x4 i removed the stock intake manifold and egr i replaced it with a non calif. manifold. WOW what a difference. before i could only get 26 lbs of boost now i get 32lbs. when you remove the egr your CHECK ENGINE lite will stay on. behind the air intake box there is a wiring loom find the black with pink stripe wire and cut it. the only thing theCHECK ENGINE lite is for is to monitor the egr and the transmission i also sugest that you get a trans gauge if you dont allready have one. good luck and happy driving!!!

I have a California 96. I took the CAlifornia manifold to a local machine shop that also does Heliarc work and had it milled out and a plate heliarced to cover the mill job. This way, you keep the EGR valve and all the plumbing and it works - except what you mill out is the restriction that causes the pressure drop that allows the EGR to work. Relieving the Quarter sized restriction means no pressure drop so basically the EGR never opens in response to that drop. But the setup looks stock and should pass the eyeball smog test that is sure to come up in california on Diesels in the neart future.

On my '97 5spd I just did a quick test, I disconnected the vacuum from the EGR and blocked the tubing, then drove around until it got to normal temp and hit the freeway, the check engine light never came on. Tried looking for any sensors that might trigger the EGR not opening and couldn't find any on the exhaust or intake manifold, there are other tubes attached to the vacuum motor for the HVAC and cruise, so I'm wondering if this setup is ok until I can "fix" it properly (Money permitting, new intake manifold and just putting a plate over the exhaust hole)? It's probably just my imagination and wishful thinking for the test, but the engine seemed to pick up better and the turbo spooled sooner and faster when accelerating? Like I said, probably my imagination, but if this is what should be expected, even better! #ad
