I have just had my truck worked on a little and have some questions. The local shop that I took the truck to checked my pump timing (it was ok so they didn't modify it) and disconnected my vacuum line to the waste gate to increase boost at lower rpm's. I have read on the message board that many guys are buying different torque plates and installing in their pumps to increase power. The guy that worked on my truck says that the way he turns up the power on these trucks is by dis-connecting the waste gate vacuum line, and by taking the torque plate COMPLETELY OUT of the pump. I was wondering what are the pros vs. the cons either way. Taking the plate out seems to be much cheaper. Is there a downside to this?

There is a post on this board somewhere that Joe Donnelly warns that removing the torque plate is a REALLY bad idea! Sounds to me like you need to forget where this guy's shop is for the good of your engine.

Hmm, the wastegate line is a pressure line not a vaccume line. Taking it out improves top end, not bottom end. It allows the boost to go higher, and not open when it has alot of flow. And it aint got anywhere near that much flow at bottom end. If you want to add bottom end, adjust the star wheel. There is an 8mm plug on the cover over the plate, remove that and turn the wheel towards the engine for low end power and smoke #ad
.
Also, taking out the plate is BAD. #ad
It will break parts in there by having too much travel. And i've herd that it aint anywhere near cheep to fix. If you want some power, get injectors before playin with the plate. When you play with the plate, the injection pressures get very high, and it is very hard on the pump and it costs $$$$ to fix. The injectors add power safely and dont hurt the pump. Then you can slide the plate foreward without worry, or go with a bigger plate.
I would suggest getting a new mechanic if he suggests removing the plate.

Is it ok to leave the waste gate line loose or should I hook it back up. I want to find ways to increase power but do it safely. #ad
Also, I want to only do things now that will not void my factory warranty (truck only has 57k miles). Things that can be reversed fairly easy before I carry the truck into the dealership if I need to.

The first step to safely 'bomb' your truck is to get a boost gauge and more importantly an EGT gauge so you don't melt your pistons or anneal your rings. My experience has been that the stock 215hp injectors work good with a mild to medium fuel plate. If you want really BIG hp then you will need injectors,a different turbo, possibly exhaust, trans or clutch work etc.....

I aggree with Joe G, find a different shop, that guy sounds like trouble.

Happy Bombing #ad

I recalled reading a letter in Issue
20 of the "Turbo Diesel Register"
Magazine, sent in by Christopher
Timochko (A. K. A. #ad
iesel5. 9), where
"AutoWurks Diesel" in Caldwell, N. J.
removed the torque plate from his
97 Dodge CTD. I went back and checked
the article that Chris submitted to
the magazine. "Auto Wurks" had done
modifications to the pump, installed
different injectors and re-set his
timing among other things. On page
#88, right side of the page, third
paragraph Chris wrote: "The next
thing he (Mike Primamore-Owner)added
was a special non-wastegated turbine
housing and four-inch mandrel bent
stainless steel exhaust system. Also
added to the equation were the "Big
Guns" matched flowing injectors, and
a custom reworking and timing of my
injection pump using what Mike called
his "secret recipe. " All I know is
that the TORQUE PLATE WAS REMOVED and
returned to me to use as a very expen-
sive paperweight. "

Showeth, Chris posts to this website
alot and is presently doing alot of
diesel performance testing with Mike
at "Auto Wurks" on his 97 CTD. They
also have a separate Dodge CTD that
runs the quarter-mile with very low
E. T. 's. He will most likely see
your post along with my comments
and give you some advice on this.
If not, check out his posting in the
12 Valve Archives on the "Auto Wurks"
Dodge or e-mail him through his
profile. I know will be glad to help
you.

Hope this has helped you some.

My mistake! The posting that Chris
entered is still on the "Active"
page and is titled: "Auto Wurks

Also sorry for the "typing errors"
in that last post.

Here I am. Initially I was running a "one size fits all" torque plate, which are designated by a number (#1,#2,#11, etc. ). I had saved the stock torque plate and when I met Michael four years ago, he worked on my badly stumbling truck and the first thing he pulled was the aftermarket torque plate. He DID replace it with a Genuine Bosch fuel stop plate. He is a certified Bosch Diesel Injection shop. Years later, the bond between us is very strong and together we set out to build a truck which will go into the 11 second bracket. We didn't just do that with a torque plate and disabling the wastegate. Read my signature... My truck is the test mule for what we do best... . POWER. With my truck and his knowledge and lots of good hard work, we pioneered a great deal of the performance products you see out there. The TDR brought it all together and spread the world to the country. Soon, people were driving from all over the country to have our hands in their engines. Let me know what you need to know. Running without a torque plate is something the P7100 was not designed to do and is "BAD".

Thanks for all of the input guys! What about the turbo waste gate though? Is it ok to leave it unhooked or should I re-attach and find additional power elsewhere? #ad

If you get a torque plate kit from TST it will have a special elbow fitting that restricts the waste gate so you get more boost. However, the waste gate will still work. It's set somewhere about 28-30 PSI before the waste gate opens. That's plenty of boost unless you BOMB it more than just a torque plate.
