Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Lift pump question again??

I am getting ******. To make a long story short, (keep in mind, story short, road long) I put a Banks powerpack on my 01 and it ran great. Soon it started to miss @ wot then at less power and soon could hardly go the speed limit. Was told my VP was dieing because of bad lift pump. (it was bad). Put on a FASS and had all the press in the world. Still had miss. Bought a new IP from oregon fuel injection and Viola. All was right with the world.

A few weeks go by and the miss comes back. Called OFI and they told me to untap pump wire. Down on power, but no miss. By the way, no codes, nowhere, nohow, never. Retap wire and runs good for awile and then miss comes back.

Call Banks. After much groveling and self deprecation they send me a new ottomind box. I am back in business. A couple of weeks go by and the miss starts up again. What the ****? Un tap wire and ... ... ... . Down on power but runs good. Drive like that a few days, then retap wire and all is good for a while. Then it starts all over again.

I am not looking to blame here. I love the way my truck performs when all things are working good. I don't want to keep trying to fix unbroken parts and chase the wrong thing, so can anyone please help.

Matthew.

Similar problems. Over about three and a half years and about $500 in diagnostic fees (from Dodge) and three Ottominds and two wiring hannesses and a few other parts, I convinced Banks to refund my money, which they did without hassle. . No hard feelings, as they tried and I tried. It was just that my Dodge didn't want to run with the Banks Ottomind. It works fine with and Edge EZ. I am considering adding a 'comp' to my Edge.

Good luck,

FISH DOC

Matt--I had the same problem with the banks. Missed at wot. Took off the tap wire & the miss went away. I put a new EDGE comp on and no more problems (new vp44 & catcher ECU also!). Also- the Edge is much easier to install. You will have to buy new gauges as the banks gauges are proprietary to the Banks Ottomind. You will be much happier with the Edge also. Don't forget to install a fuel pressure gauge!

Thanks

This is what I had figured but could not confirm. I am not happy that anyone would have these kinds of problems, this should be fun, not heart wrenching that the trucks we love are sick and we can do nothing for them. Or worse yet we start to hate the truck. Thanks for your experience.

It is hard for me to understand how we can get trucks with diesel engines of such a high level of technological advancement and performance potential, And then when we ask for service and advice from "Profesionals" we get some Jethro saying you need a new Fremble rod or Pump Dweezle.

Why the separation between the Geniuses who build these modern marvels, those they employ. This Forum and those who subscribe do a fine service. If the auto makers and aftermarket folks would only read these conversations I se a huge potential for them to foster an already HUGE brand loyal base.

As another thread in this forum states, "pay it forward". Sometimes good intended failures do more for good will that apathetic success.

Goodby otto mind

Rebel Ram, As you can see by my sig there is no longer a Banks power pack listed. After some of the same problems that you listed that you had with yours. I am now very happy driving and towing with my truck with the caTCHER ECM, Dodgzilla and a very nice set of Don M Mk 1. 6 injectors. I did have to get a set of gages frim Geno's when I took the Otto mind out.

Hey Leroy, how do you like the 1. 6 sticks with the Catcher?? I just got a set, don't have them in yet. :(

Tom

I am very happy with the 1. 6 sticks. I made a trip to Alabama pulling my 28 ft 5er and got 14 mpg. I still have all the power that I need and my egt's were just fine. I pulled every hill on I-65 through KY and TN and still had power to spare. Just roll into the go pedal and no smoke. Real nice. :) :)

I also trashed my Ottomind and went with a Edge comp. Had the same problem with the WOT stumble/hesitation. Called Banks and tech staff was next to useless. Also with the Edge my cruise control now works without the surging or yo yo effect.
