Considering an RV purchase

Have a question that I've never considered before. Looking at purchasing a slide in camper which will have a wiring harness to connect to the truck for 12v power. We have a 7 prong female connection in truck bed which would be used for this. Also, will be towing a boat which would use the rear bumper 7 prong female connector. Boat trailer brakes are surge, not electric. Will having 2 wiring harnesses connected at the same time overload the system? Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

You should be fine. The few lights that your boat trailer will have and the few lights your slide in camper will have combined are much less than some larger trailer would have. I wouldn't worry about it. Have you got the 7 pin factory plug in the box? Either way you're good to go, just might have to make a extension cord to plug the camper into the bumper plug or just add a plug in the box for a clean set-up.

I switched to LEDs just for that reason. The only incandescent bulbs I have are the front turn/parking lights. 5er and boat trailer are all LEDs.

Thanks guys. I was concerned that since the camper refrigerator also runs off 12 v when traveling, the compressor cycling on/off might overload things.

There isn't a compressor in a normal RV frig. There is a heating element, and it might stay activated constantly if the outside temps are high enough. You might consider a separate circuit with a higher gauge wire for it.

No problem. I did a 14,000 mile 4 month trip last winter hauling my TC and pulling a cargo trailer. TC plugged into factory pin in box and trailer to bumper pin.

Outside of the fridge as I cant say about that I have my headache rack lights wired (parking, brake, turn signals and reverse lights) to the trailer circuit and towing my trailer or fifth wheel no issues.

On my '02 the parking lights on the 7-pin has it's own circuit, relay and fuse. The 4-pin uses the truck parking light circuit. I assume newer trucks are the same. Some trailers are lit up like a Christmas tree.
