Some time ago someone had a post explaining how to make a switch so you could shift to 4 wheel low... . flick a switch and have just 2 wheel low. At the time I did not see a need for it. Now after slipping my cluch alot while backing trailers in. . I SEE THE NEED!!

I did a search but, must not have thought of the right words to search for. If anyone has any knowledge about this, could you point me in the right direction.

I have put the truck in 4 wheel low and it is great for backing up slowly, but on a hard surface it is tough on the drive line.

Plus if anyone had done this and had any bad result could you let me know that also...

I've had mine in for a few months now and love it! I use it 2-3 times a day and haven't had any problame with it.
There are a few places to get these from... Someone in the classifieds sells a brass push/pull valve,Low Range Enterprises sells one and I think BD offers one.

I'm a picky kind of guy with all kinds of parts available to me,so I assembeled my own 'kit' with a Nippondenso vacuum switch.
It was real easy to install. My vacuum
switch is installed by the vacuum tee with the hoses re-routed to it and I mounted my rocker switch on the floor console(6spd) next to the t-case lever.

Lets move this back up.

MikeR do by chance have blue print on how to do this?

Thanks for the reply, MikeR. Could you be more specific as to how you do this. The post that I saw a couple of months ago. Expained it but I was not listening. Since this has been moved to the products Forum I do not know if you will get this, but the GODS have spoken. I must miss a lot because I do not have the time to go to all of the Forums and read everything that comes into this site.

Heck yeah,I read all the forums... Hehe. I knew I would get asked this.

If you don't buy a kit from a vendor and are tring to find your own vacuum switch, just remember to find one that is 'open' when the on/off switch is off. And of course it closes when you turn your switch on to cut vacuum to the front axle. The vacuum switch goes between the 'tee' above the intake manifold and the gray vacuum line coming up from the transfer case.
The wiring for an on/off switch is up to you.

TDR issue #25 pg. 29 shows a kit installed. This is the best picture I've seen and that is how I did mine... I just used a smaller vacuum switch made by Nippondenso.

If any of you guys have a fax#,then email me your #. I can draw up a blueprint on how I did mine and send it to you.

The only caveat I have found with this set up is that if you have a 5sp with limited slip you really only end up with 3 wheel drive. Or so it seems. I still get some front wheel hop when doing a sharp turn. I have not tried sharp turns on pavment because I am some concerned about breaking something.

Bear,
Are you sure you're turning the switch on before you shift the t-case into 4Low?
You may have a leaky vacuum switch or a blown fuse. I only use my 2Low only on pavement and I don't get any hopping during sharp turns.

MikeR got your FAX thanks #ad

I am very interested in the 2 low switch settups that some of you guys have put to gether from salvage yards but was wondering if someone could go into alittle more detail on how to install and exactly which switch did you use from what vehichle and were was the vaccum switch located.

Thanks,
Paul

Why would not a simple 1/4" ball valve work, put it in line with the front axle vacuum switch, close it before you shift into 4wd and it should prevent the front axle from getting vacuum??

I think the vacume needs to be switched from one side of the motor to the other. There was someone that had a website that was selling the mechanical type vacume swith for this ( I think) Seems that there was a picture/story in TDR a while back about this. I believe the website has been shut down. I was thinking of just buying the kit that he was selling

I sent these directions to a couple of guys already but I thought I'd pull it out of the file and post it here. I also drew up a good blueprint but I don't have a scanner,so I'm waiting for a buddy to scan it and send it to me.

The important thing is the 2 port vacuum switch... you need to get one that is 'open' when it's in the off position so vacuum can flow through normally. I used a Nippondenso EGR vacuum switch for a Honda Civic. They never break! The rest of the parts list is simple and small:
Rocker switch (I got a normal non-lighted black one from Radio Shack),a 5 amp inline fuse holder,1 foot of vacuum hose and enough electrical wire to go from the vacuum switch to the on/off switch.
My Y2K truck is a manual trans so I chose to put the on/off switch on the floor console between the t-case shift lever and the big cup holder.
I tapped into the "power outlet" wiring for power and put the inline fuse holder between the power outlet wiring and on/off switch.
I then ran a long wire from the on/off switch out to the engine compartment.
I carefully ran this wire along with the factory underdash wire harness and
zip-tied it as I went along so it looks clean.
On my truck I mounted the vacuum switch to the metal bracket above the intake manifold that all the wire harnesses attach to. I removed the bracket, drilled a mounting hole for the vacuum switch, and reinstalled it. The vacuum switch has a 'pos' and 'neg' terminal and I used a short piece of wire to ground the 'neg' terminal to the same bolt that I used to mount the vacuum switch to the bracket. Now the wire that I ran under the dash, into the engine compartment is connected to the 'pos' terminal in the vacuum switch.
Right above the bracket, you'll see a vacuum tee with two ports... one port is capped and the other is the line that goes down to the transfer case. Disconnect the tranfer case line from the tee and plug it to one side
of the vacuum switch and cut a piece of vacuum hose and connect the other side of the vacuum switch to the tee... and you're all done! Simple,eh.
The only thing I might recommend is a different place to mount the vacuum switch. I mounted it to that bracket because I wanted it as close to the tee
as possible... bad idea if you're running Isspro gauges like me. That bracket is holding about 50 wires,my EGT probe wire and that vacuum switch... well there is so much RF (frequencies) going on there that once in a great while the vacuum switch amplifies a signal and affects the EGT gauge reading for a minute. I still need to move my vacuum switch to a different location.

I have one of those free internet fax machines. If you fax it to me, I will get it as a computer image. This is a great way for anyone to get a low budget black and white scanner #ad

Just sign up for the service and fax yourself!! It will arrive in an email.

I will delete this number in a day or two to prevent too much abuse. [email me and I'll share the number]

Tell me where to send the file or if you want me to post it for you.

By the way, the free service is http://www.messageclick.com

Just wondering if David has received the schematic of the vaccum awitch yet.
