What is the turbo size on the new auto Rams?

My first state inspection has arrived this month.
I was wondering about this truck with a straight pipe.

Any Texans out there know if this set up will pass?
It had the straight pipe when I bought it, I don't have
the cat or muffler.
Thanks

i used to live in texas. I found that some inspection places go over your truck with a microscope and some check over your vehicle very little. I found that never take any vehicle to a place that only does state inspections. They always will find something wrong. From my experience though most places seldom even look under the car and i don't think they would even notice you not having a muffler. heck if you don't pass at one place just take it to another until you get it passed.

Well in Terrell, there arn't too many places to go.
I was planning on trying more than one anyhow.
I'm just not sure of the regulations for diesels [pick ups]
That was a good thought about not going to a place that
only does or specilizes in inspections.
Thanks cowboy

I just got my truck inspected a few weeks ago by a guy who is very detail oriented in my book. I asked about the muffler since I just pulled the straight pipe off for the inspection. The guy stated that if the truck came with a muffler from the factory, then something needs to be there. This guy never looked under the truck because it sounded (and was) stock at the time. I am sure that if I went in with a straight pipe, he would have looked under the truck and failed the inspection. After the inspection, I put the straight pipe back on.

zzman,

I've never had an inspection guy ever even go as far as look under the hood or under any of the diesel pickups I have had. I also have a '86 Ford Bronco 4x4 with nearly 200,000 miles on it--sometimes they raise the hood and glance to see if it looks stock, slam the hood, check the headlights by shining them on the wall, toot the horn, slap on a new sticker, and collect $10. 50.

One thing in my favor is that I keep my vehicles looking nice. I'm sure if I drove in with a POS, I would get "the full meal deal". I think the inspectors can see pretty well a vehilce that is kept up and one that isn't and take that into consideration.

Hope no one with the TX DOT reads this!! #ad

Had my truck inspected three weeks ago. All they checked were brakes, horn, and lights. Whole thing took about 5 minutes.

Do they test for emissions in Kaufman County? You are still close to Dallas, but I know that there isn't an emissions test in Johnson County just south of Ft. Worth. It all depends where you are. I didn't have to pass emissions in my old gasser when I had it in Austin either.

A couple years back, Kaufman Co. didn't check for emission control.
Not too sure about now. I remember them putting a piece of
paper in the tail pipe on my gasser.

Wonder if Wal-mart does inspections?

Maybe I'll see whats up tomorrow.
Thanks guys

Ron Z,
That strip of paper in the tailpipe was to test to see if you have been using leaded gasoline in your vehicle. Since leaded gasoline is no longer available for highway use, the test is no longer used.

Back a few years ago when the emission tests were in force, diesel pickups were exempt. Only the gas burners were being tested.

My truck has a Cat.

The testers have never looked to see if there is a cat in place. On the test report, a big N/A is printed in the Catalytic Converter box.

Here's a quote lifted from the above site:

NOTE: The inspection of the exhaust emission system shall not apply to motor vehicles altered and modified to use only a fuel other than gasoline.

I read that also, and as I read farther, they talk about propane powered vehicles in the next paragraph. Since the Cummins is not modified or altered to run on diesel fuel, This section does not apply to our trucks. In the exhaust section, they specifically talk about the cat and its requirements to be there if the truck came with one. I like how the exhaust system is a visual inspection only. I think I will gut the cat and stick a 4" pipe straight through the casing. This will pass the visual inspection.

What year was it again when they did away with using the cat? I think it was '98. That would mean there was only a cat in 94,95,96 and 97. I don't think most inspection places will remember which years do and don't use a cat. Most would be surprised if you told them there was a cat on a diesel in the first place.

I ran my 95 for nearly 3 years without a cat and muffler and had no problem with inspections. My 98 has no muffler either. No problems. I read somewhere that if the vehicle is turbocharged, that counts as a sound deadning device and a muffler is not needed. That may not be true. I do know that if the truck is registered as a farm truck you can remove the cat legally. You just have to file some paperwork with the State.
