This is my first post. I have enjoyed reading the forums for a few months and have learned a lot about my 1997 3/4 ton, auto, 2wd w/130,000. I use it to pull my rockcrawler to the trails on the weekends. Next week is my first long tow to Moab, UT. I can't wait :)

I have slid the stock plate and starwheel forward, gutted the cat, and installed a non EGR intake (its a CA truck). The truck pulls pretty well, although I'm waiting for the transmission to go so I can get a DTT trans, then BOMBS AWAY.

I just bought the truck, so I don't know it's history, but I suspect the transmission has never been touched. Lately, I,ve been getting a shudder when the convertor is locked up and I'm giving it good throttle. Almost feels like the rear axle is hopping. My buddy ( a mechanic) thinks it's the clutch packs in the transmission slipping.

He recommends putting Type F fluid in the transmission. He's had a couple vehicles with this transmission, and has used type F with success.

I was hoping I could get some opinions on using Type F fluid, or what fluid would you recommend to help keep my transmission from dying on my upcoming trip??

Thanks!

Rick

Type F was recommended to me by Bill of DTT due to my hp level. He said it is the grabbiest of all the transmission fluids. It tends to shudder during low speed lockup but that is in a good transmission. I would give it a try to see if it helps your situation.

I would say the clutch in the torque converter is slipping and, from the shutter you describe, will not last long. Most of us here have experienced it. Hopefully it will give you time to do some diligent research into an aftermarket torque converter with triple disk clutch and perhaps a rebuilt transmission to go with it.
