I looked at the U-joints on the C-V joint and I don't know how to replace them. They don't have the usual clips on the inside of the yokes. Instead there are these pins that seem to go thru the caps and the yokes. Ive tried driving them out but they are too soft. I am grateful for any suggestions.

Thanks

Not 100% on this however I have worked on many many many 4X4's over the years. I stress the word "worked on" as the reason I don't own one. What you are experiencing is probably the nylon retainer. This would be removed by heating the yoke until the nylon oozes out AND NO MORE. The replacement joint will be equipped with a snap ring.

I have rebuilt quite a few of these over the years and what you've got is the factorys retainer. It is a nylon gunk they squirt in there to hold the cups in place instead of using a "C" clip. AKA=cheaper

What I would do is take the unit to a driveline shop and have them push it apart. But if you want to do the work yourself, heat it a little and push it apart using spacers (or sockets) and a vice. DO NOT pound it apart with a hammer!!!

And this is VERY important---mark all the parts so that you can put it back together the same way it came apart. These are ballanced units.

They are hard to work on as you must have several loose parts aligned at one time while trying to push it together.

Take 9 valiums and drink 4 beers and send the wife to another town before starting.

Just kidding here (about the valiums and beer)

Last one I did was the schools snow plow truck. Got it all together (CV joint,,,,, not myself) when I noticed I had install one of the joints back wards  :{ Makes it a bear to grease.

Thanks I'll have to see what the availability is on a replacement (I'm guessing it will be more than I can spend) then assess my capabilities then scrounge money to buy a replacement.

I am happy to have this forum as a resource to resolve the issues that come up with my truck.

Thank You

Art, here in the Northwest we have a club of Diesel owners called the Northwest Bombers. We get together all the time and work on our trucks or just help others work on theirs. OR we just sit and drink beer and tell lies about how great we are.

You might look around for a club like ours in your area. As we do, the owner, not knowing how to do a job like yours, will get the parts and someone will have the knowledge to do the job.

All you would need would be the U-joints and presto, job done.

And don't forget to check the centering ball inside the main housing. it has a strong spring and a little wear is OK.

Good luck

Thanks
