i need help. my rear u joint went on my drive shaft (one piece, short bed) and i need the truck to tow on monday. i checked all the previous posts and can not determine if i can buy at napa what i need to do it myself on sunday. are there u joints to buy that fit without grinding or any mods? do i need any special presses to put it all together?

thanks for any input and part numbers.

I can't say whether you'll need to do any grinding since I haven't done a replacement myself yet. But this thread is one of the best on the subject. Bottom line is a #315 will fit, but some grinding/sanding may be required.

Its a #351 not a 315 :) and is available at Napa for around 28 bucks.

Or online (rockauto.com) for around $20 + ship.

You might possibly have to grind the top of the caps down by around a millimeter or so.

It is not a very hard process. You can bang out the old U-joints with a ball peen hammer and sockets as a make shift press and anvil.

Just match the old U joint with the new U-joint for proper fit.

i am 90% sure i have a u-joint that is on the way out [27,xxx kilometers ] as i got this lovely squeek/chrip that is vehicle speed dependent at low gears and a growing take off viberation. i think i will let warrenty take this one, and will stock myself 2 #351's for when the next one goes [unless it is under warrenty] to change them out.
